Mauve Mist Bottlebrush

Mauve Mist Bottlebrush (Callistemon 'Mauve Mist') is the bottlebrush for gardeners who want the birds without the usual fire engine red. It grows to about 3m tall and 2m wide, and carries soft mauve to pink brushes through spring and again in autumn. Few native shrubs handle this much: dry spells, wet soil, salt wind and frost, all from the same plant.

Hedging and screening. Plant 1.2m apart for a dense hedge. At that spacing it closes into a flowering screen roughly 2m high within two to three seasons, and it takes a trim without sulking.

Damp and coastal ground. It tolerates wet feet and salt wind, so it suits low corners of the block, dam edges and exposed coastal boundaries where other shrubs fail.

Feature planting in small gardens. A single plant fills a courtyard corner, and it can be lifted into a small multi trunked tree by removing the lowest branches.

Growing Mauve Mist Bottlebrush in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun gives the heaviest flowering; part shade works but the shrub opens up and flowers less. It suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and arid gardens, and it is frost hardy once established, so cold inland and southern districts are within range.

Soil. Almost anything, including clay that holds water after rain. It is not fussy about pH. Mulch 75mm deep and keep it back from the stems.

Water and feed. Water twice a week through the first summer to settle the roots, then only in long dry spells. Use a low phosphorus native fertiliser in early spring; standard garden fertiliser can damage the roots.

Pruning. Trim immediately after each flush, taking the spent brushes and about 100mm of stem behind them. That single habit keeps a bottlebrush dense instead of leggy. It reshoots from old wood, so a neglected plant can be cut back hard in spring.

Common questions

How far apart for a hedge?

1.2m apart in a single row. Closer planting does not close the gap faster and makes each plant compete for water once the roots meet.

Can I keep it lower than 3m?

Yes. Two trims a year, taken straight after flowering, will hold it at 1.5m to 2m without thinning it out at the base.

Will it survive a wet winter in heavy soil?

Better than most shrubs. It is one of the few natives rated for wet feet, so a low spot that stays soggy for a week after rain will not kill it.
