Garden Tools

Good hand tools do more for a new garden than any other purchase after the plants themselves. This range is deliberately small: four cast aluminium hand tools made in Australia, the set that holds all four, and two styles of glove. The decision that matters is matching the tool to the job, because a fork, a cultivator and the two trowels each do something the others cannot.

Australian made, cast in marine grade aluminium

The fork, cultivator and both trowels are designed in Australia and cast from marine grade aluminium alloy in the maker's own foundry, where the range has been produced since the mid 1970s. Marine grade aluminium does not rust or corrode, so a tool left in a garden bed overnight or put away wet comes to no harm, and the low weight eases the strain of a long day of planting. The same tools are used by Landcare groups, botanical gardens and local councils across Australia.

Which tool for which job

  • Garden fork. Four straight tines for loosening, lifting and turning soil, raking out stones and breaking clods. The first tool into compacted ground.
  • Garden cultivator. Four curved tines that stir and aerate the top layer before planting, and uproot young weeds between plants afterwards.
  • Wide trowel. A broad, scooped blade for digging planting holes and moving soil or potting mix.
  • Narrow trowel. A slim blade for tight spots between established plants, for weeding and for working fertiliser into the soil.

Anyone setting up from scratch is best served by the set in the hand tools range, which holds all four with a pair of gloves.

Planting day

For tubestock, seedlings and small pots the hand tools are all you need: loosen the bed with the fork, open each hole with the wide trowel, set the plant at the depth it sat in its pot, backfill and firm in. For a run of hedging and screening plants in larger pots the holes are dug with a spade, and the hand tools take over for the finishing: breaking up the backfill, forming a watering basin around each plant and keeping the bed weeded while the hedge fills in.

Gloves

Two gloves cover the two kinds of garden work. Ninja HPT GripX gloves are close fitting, with a breathable nylon liner and a foam coating that grips when wet, for planting, potting and pruning. Riggers gloves are the heavy duty choice for digging, clearing and handling rough timber and tools. Both are in the gardening gloves range.

Common questions

What is Australian made in this range?

The four cast aluminium hand tools: the fork, the cultivator and the two trowels. They are designed and cast in Australia. The gloves are separate branded products and are not part of that claim.

Do aluminium tools need any care?

Very little. They will not rust, so there is no oiling or drying off. Rinse the soil away when the job is done and they are ready for next time.

Are hand tools enough for hard ground?

For garden beds, pots and planting holes for small plants, yes. For unworked clay or large holes, open the ground with a spade or mattock first and use the hand tools for the finer work around the plant.

Is the set a good gift?

Yes. Four tools and a pair of gloves cover what a new gardener needs to plant out a bed or a balcony of pots. Choose the glove size when ordering. Delivered Australia wide.
