Garden Hand Tools

These are the four hand tools that do most of the work in a garden bed: a fork, a cultivator, a narrow trowel and a wide trowel, sold singly or together as a set with a pair of gloves. All four are made in Australia from cast marine grade aluminium alloy. The choice to make is simple: buy the one tool you are missing, or the set if you are starting out.

Why cast aluminium

Each tool is cast in the maker's own Australian foundry, where the range has been produced since the mid 1970s. Marine grade aluminium alloy does not rust or corrode, so the tools shrug off wet soil and a night left out in the garden. They are light in the hand, and the ergonomic handle is shaped for a comfortable, secure grip.

What each tool does

  • Fork. Loosens, lifts and turns soil. Its four straight tines push into the ground easily, rake out stones and weeds and break up clods.
  • Cultivator. Its four curved tines stir, break up and aerate the soil before planting. Worked lightly through the topsoil later on, it uproots young weeds around growing plants.
  • Wide trowel. Digs small planting holes and scoops soil and potting mix.
  • Narrow trowel. Pierces soil easily and reaches between plants, for breaking up earth, weeding and mixing in fertiliser.

Using them at planting time

Loosen the planting area with the fork or cultivator before you dig, so the roots of a new plant move into opened soil instead of sitting in a hard-sided hole. Dig with the wide trowel, and keep the narrow trowel for planting into gaps and for potting up into pots and planters. After planting, a pass with the cultivator every few weeks keeps the surface open and the weeds down.
