Planting Day Essentials

Plants do best when they go into the ground with a little help. This is the short list we would put beside any plant order: a feed to carry new plants through their first months, a seaweed tonic for planting day, hand tools that will not rust, gloves, and solar lights to show the garden off once it is in.

Feeding new plants

A slow release fertiliser at planting feeds steadily for months, which suits hedges, shrubs and trees. Fruiting and flowering plants do better on a feed with more potassium. Many Australian natives are sensitive to phosphorus, so for those choose a feed that lists natives on the label. Indoor plants need a gentle liquid food at a low rate.

Tools and gloves

The fork, cultivator and two trowels are made in Australia from cast marine grade aluminium alloy, so they will not rust. A wide trowel digs planting holes for tubestock and small pots; the narrow trowel works between established plants. Choose close-fitting coated gloves for planting and riggers gloves for digging.

Lighting

Solar spot lights need no wiring: push the spike into the garden bed and aim the light up a feature tree. Path lights suit the edge of a driveway or the run of a hedge. Place the solar panel where it gets full sun.

Common questions

Do these arrive with my plants?

Garden goods and live plants are delivered separately, so items in one order can arrive on different days.

When should I feed a new plant?

At planting, at the rate on the label, then again when the release period on the label has passed. Water in well. Delivered Australia wide.
