More information
Get the size of your indoor pot right first
Indoor pots are bought by the numbers, and the number that matters is the diameter of the plastic nursery pot your plant already lives in. Most houseplants sit in a 130mm to 200mm nursery pot, and larger floor plants in a 250mm or 300mm. The easiest system is the cache pot method: leave the plant in its nursery pot and sit the whole thing inside a decorative pot 20mm to 50mm wider. It hides the plastic, protects your floors, and turns repotting or swapping a tired plant into a ten second job.
Within this collection, the White Indoor Glazed Cache Pot starts at $7.95 for windowsill plants, the Italian styled ceramic pots (Noto, Lipari, Trapani and Enna) run to 360mm for mid sized floor plants, and the StoneLite and Terrazzo ranges scale up for an indoor fig, dracaena or palm. If you are shopping for a shelf of small plants, the small pots collection collects everything under bench scale in one place.
Drainage indoors: the question that decides everything
A pot without a drainage hole is a cache pot, and indoors that is a feature. Water the plant at the sink or in the shower, let it drain fully, then return it to the cache pot; nothing ever drips on the floor. Tip out any water that collects in the base within a day, because roots standing in it will rot.
If you would rather plant directly into the decorative pot, use one with a drainage hole and pair it with a saucer. The Terrazzo round, square and trough saucers in this collection are made exactly for that, and a saucer under any large pot is cheap insurance for timber and carpet.
Materials and weight
Ceramic is the classic indoor finish, glazed and easy to wipe clean, in whites, sage, soft pink and patterned designs. Terrazzo adds speckled texture that suits modern interiors. GRC and StoneLite are moulded stone composites at a fraction of the weight of solid concrete, which is the difference between shifting a large planted pot yourself and calling for help. Weight matters twice indoors: once for your back, and once for apartment balconies and timber floors with load and scratch limits. Most of these finishes also come in the white pots collection if you are matching a light interior.
Common questions
Do indoor pots need a drainage hole?
No, as long as you use them as cache pots and water the plant elsewhere. Only plant directly into a pot that drains. The fastest way to kill a houseplant is soil sitting in a sealed pot of water.
What size pot suits an indoor tree?
A 300mm nursery pot needs a decorative pot of roughly 350mm to 400mm internal diameter, which is where the 360mm ceramics and the larger StoneLite tree planters come in. Bigger is fine; it just needs more careful watering.
Will a heavy pot damage a timber floor?
It can. Use a saucer or pot feet under anything large, choose the lightweight StoneLite or GRC versions for big plants, and lift rather than drag when you move them.
