Atlantis Well Jar

The Atlantis Well Jar is a small, squat jar in hand made aged ceramic, double fired in Vietnam for frost resistance. It is made in one size, 30cm across by 33cm high, holding 6 litres and weighing 12kg empty. The heavy walls and modest soil volume tell you what it is: a decorative piece that takes a plant, not a growing pot.

Why you'll love it

• Solid for its size. Twelve kilograms in a 30cm pot means it stays put on a windy balcony and does not skate across tiles.
• Aged glaze, hand fired. Tone and texture shift across the surface, so it looks like something found rather than something bought.
• Frost resistant. The second firing tightens the ceramic, so it can sit outdoors through a cold winter.
• Indoors or out. At this scale it works on a hall table or an entry step as well as in the garden.

Sizes and what fits in them

One size only, quoted as outside width by height.

• 30 x 33cm, 6 litres, 12kg empty. Six litres is a small root volume, so plant it with succulents, a compact fern, sansevieria or a herb group.
• Not for shrubs or trees. Anything building a real root system will fill this in a season and need moving on.
• As an object. The shape carries unplanted on a step or beside a doorway.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Aged ceramic, hand made and double fired in Vietnam. The glaze is uneven by design, so colour and texture will vary from the photograph.

Outdoors. Frost resistant and happy outside, where the aged finish keeps developing. Raise it on pot feet so the base is not sitting in water on paving.

Drainage. It is drilled. Keep the holes clear, cover each with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen rather than fabric or geofabric, which clogs, then 50mm of 10mm gravel before a premium potting mix. Garden soil compacts in a pot this small and should not be used. Indoors it drains freely, so it needs a saucer under it.

What to expect when it arrives

The jar ships empty and is dispatched in 2 to 5 business days, delivered Australia wide with delivery from $29.95. At 30 x 33cm and 12kg it is a comfortable one person carry, so you can move it around the house or garden until it looks right. Water it more often than a larger pot, because 6 litres of mix dries out quickly in summer.
