StoneLite Chopped Tub Tree Planter

The StoneLite Chopped Tub is a tree planter cast from glass-reinforced concrete, so it reads as solid concrete but weighs about a third as much. It comes in nine sizes, from a 30cm tub holding 15 litres to a 112cm planter holding 790 litres, in eleven finishes. Choose it when you want a tree in a container two people can still lift.

Sizes and what fits in them

Nine sizes, quoted as outside diameter by height. Plant something suited to container life: aggressive root systems will damage any planter.

• 30cm to 42cm, 15 to 40 litres. Clipped balls, succulents, herbs and a single upright feature beside a door.
• 48cm to 56cm, 60 to 100 litres. Larger shrubs, dwarf citrus and strappy leaf plants with room to spread.
• 75cm to 112cm, 240 to 790 litres. Real tree sizes, and that volume is what stops the mix drying out by mid afternoon.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Glass-reinforced concrete throughout, with empty weights from 3kg at 30cm to 61kg at 112cm.

Outdoors. The sprayed colours use Dulux Weathershield, guaranteed 15 years against blistering, peeling and flaking. Raw concrete is supplied unsprayed, and the three largest sizes, 90cm to 112cm, are sprayed only.

Drainage. It has drainage holes. Keep them clear and stand the tub on pot feet. Cover each hole with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clog. Add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then premium potting mix, never garden soil. Indoors, use a saucer.

What to expect when it arrives

The planter ships empty, packed to travel. Raw concrete is dispatched in 2 to 5 business days; custom spray colours are made to order, so allow 2 to 3 weeks. It is delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Measurements are outside dimensions, so allow for wall thickness when matching a nursery pot to the 56cm tub.
