When the plant is an advanced tree, the pot has to earn its place. These wide mouthed tree planters and commercial grade boxes are built for exactly that: deep, stable vessels that hold the volume of mix a maturing tree needs without splitting or tipping. The range runs from lightweight StoneLite tubs from about $80 through glazed ceramic planters to architectural GRC squares built for commercial installs, in finishes from raw concrete and shale grey to terracotta and white.

Choosing a planter for a tree

Size on the rootball, not the tree. Choose an opening at least 200mm wider than the rootball so there is fresh mix on every side, and a depth close to the opening width. For a tree in a 400mm nursery pot, that means a planter around 600mm across. Going one size larger again buys years before the next repot. The StoneLite tubs and chopped tubs are the entry point, the glazed ceramic planters bring colour, and the GRC squares suit commercial installs.

Weight is the real decision

An empty planter is easy to move and a full one is not. A 600mm planter holds over 100 litres of mix, more than 100kg wet before the tree goes in, so position the empty planter where it will live, on pot feet, then fill and plant in place. Lightweight StoneLite and GRC keep the empty weight manageable. On balconies and rooftops, check the structure can carry a filled statement size.

Drainage and care

A tree in a planter lives entirely on what you give it. Use a premium potting mix rather than garden soil, water deeply until it runs from the base, two or three times a week through summer, and feed with a controlled release fertiliser each spring. Keep the drainage holes clear and never stand a tree planter in a saucer of water.

Common questions

Which trees are happy long term in a planter?

Naturally compact or slow growing trees. Olives, citrus, crepe myrtles, frangipani in warm areas and Japanese maples in cool ones all spend decades in a large container. Fast forest trees outgrow any pot.

Will I need to repot?

Eventually. A tree in a generous planter goes three to five years before it wants root pruning or a size up; choosing the bigger planter pushes that job further away.
