Tall Planters

Tall planters give you height without bulk: bullets, cylinders, crucibles and tall squares that lift plants toward eye level, frame a doorway or fill a blank corner without swallowing floor space. Most pieces here are cast in glass reinforced concrete or lightweight StoneLite, so they carry the look of solid stone at a fraction of the weight. Heights run to around 550mm, in finishes from raw concrete grey to sandstone and blue. Settle on the silhouette first, then choose the finish.

Choosing a tall planter

Start with proportion. A tall planter already gives you height, so it flatters plants that mound or spill, not towering specimens. Aim for two thirds pot to one third plant, or the reverse; half and half looks awkward. Bullet pots taper to a narrow base and read as sculpture, tall squares and cylinders hold more soil and suit a small tree, and crucibles flare at the rim to show off trailing foliage.

Check the opening before you buy. A 300mm mouth hides a 200mm nursery pot neatly; the larger bullets and squares take 250mm to 300mm pots. For a serious rootball, step up to our tree planters.

Materials and weight

Most of the range is glass reinforced concrete or lightweight StoneLite, the look of stone at a fraction of the weight. A tall shape carries its load high: empty these are manageable for one person, filled they sit firm.

Filling and drainage

Never fill a tall planter with mix from the base up. Plants only use the top 300mm to 400mm of soil, so build a false bottom from an upturned grower pot or foam box and plant above it. You save 20 litres or more of mix and the pot stays movable. Add gravel first for ballast in exposed spots, and stand the pot on feet so the drainage hole never seals against paving.

Where they work

A matched pair flanking the front door is the classic move: same pot, same plant, both sides. A single anchors a blank patio corner, and three cylinders in a row screen a balcony edge. Mix silhouettes with wider bowls from the large pots collection or softer shapes from our egg and round pots.

Common questions

Will a tall planter blow over?

Not once planted, provided there is real weight low down. Gravel beneath the false bottom keeps the centre of gravity low, and the flared crucibles are steadier than they look.

What fits inside without repotting?

Measure the mouth and subtract about 50mm for the largest nursery pot that drops in cleanly. Kept in its plastic pot on a false bottom, a plant swap takes two minutes.

Do concrete finishes need sealing?

No. GRC and StoneLite are built for outdoor life and weather gently. New concrete can nudge soil pH up for the first season, so line the pot for anything that prefers acidic soil.
