The Riley Bullet from Northcote Pottery is a tall tapered planter in an antique white textured finish, 300mm across the top and 530mm high. It holds about 37 litres of mix, a real plant's worth of root room in a footprint the size of a dinner plate. Being moulded plastic rather than concrete or clay, one person can carry it up a stairwell.

Why you'll love it

  • Height without bulk. At 530mm tall it lifts a plant to eye level in an entry or a corner, while the 300mm base keeps it out of the walkway.
  • Light enough to move planted. Plastic construction means you can shift it to sweep behind or chase the light, which is not true of a pot this size in stone.
  • Drainage hole built in. Excess water leaves the base instead of collecting under the root ball.
  • Textured antique white. Enough grain to avoid the flat plastic look, in a neutral that works indoors and out.

Sizes and what fits in them

A single size. What it takes depends on how upright the plant is.

  • 300mm wide, 530mm high, about 37 litres. Enough soil volume for an established feature plant with room to grow on for several years.
  • Indoor trees and tall foliage. The tapered form suits anything with a clear trunk or an upright habit.
  • Paired at an entry. Two either side of a door is the most reliable use of a bullet shape.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Moulded plastic with a textured antique white finish, from the Northcote Pottery Riley range. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth or rinse it.

Outdoors. Approved for indoor and outdoor use, so a patio, courtyard or balcony all suit it. It is not sold with a frost or UV rating, so treat a fully exposed inland position as its limit.

Drainage. A drainage hole is included and no saucer is supplied, so add one for an indoor floor or a finished deck. A tall pot drains unevenly, so use a quality free draining mix and water slowly enough that it soaks through rather than running down the inside wall.

What to expect when it arrives

The 300mm Bullet ships empty and unplanted, boxed for transport. Position it before you fill it: 37 litres of wet mix under a mature plant is a two person lift. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
