The Black Growers Plant Tube is a 50mm square propagation tube, Australian made in black plastic and sold in a pack of six. Each tube measures 50mm wide by 50mm deep and 120mm high, holding 0.21 litres, which is the standard tubestock format: narrow at the top, deep at the base, and built for controlled root growth in the first months of a plant's life.

Why you'll love it

  • Australian made. Locally manufactured, so the tubes are consistent in size and hold their shape through repeated growing cycles.
  • Deep for their width. 120mm of depth in a 50mm square footprint gives roots somewhere to run while taking almost no bench space.
  • Drainage built in. Holes in the base let water drain straight through, which keeps cuttings from sitting wet while they are striking.
  • Made to be reused. The plastic is built for repeated watering and handling, so the tubes wash out and go again next season.

Sizes and what fits in them

One size, sold as a pack of six.

  • 50mm tube, pack of six. 50mm wide, 50mm deep and 120mm high, holding 0.21 litres of mix each.
  • What fits. Seedlings, struck cuttings, tubestock and young plants in their early stage, before they are potted on into something larger.
  • How they pack in. The square profile sits tight in trays and on benches with no wasted gaps, so six tubes occupy a block roughly 15cm by 10cm.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Black plastic in a grower grade weight, square in section. Rinse or wipe them out between uses so nothing carries from one batch to the next.

Outdoors. Suitable for indoor and outdoor growing, and at home in a greenhouse, a shade house or on a propagation bench. Black plastic warms quickly in full summer sun, so a container this small is better in filtered light while cuttings are striking.

Drainage. Drainage holes are moulded into the base and water runs straight out, so stand the tubes in a tray. No saucer is included. Because the volume is only 0.21 litres, they dry out quickly and need checking daily in warm weather.

What to expect when it arrives

The pack of six 50mm tubes ships empty, with no mix, seed or plants. They are light, they nest together for transit, and they arrive ready to fill. Tubes are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
