Choosing the right size

Grower gear follows a simple ladder. Strike cuttings and seedlings in 50mm tubes, move them into a small growers pot once roots fill the tube, then step up one or two sizes at a time as the plant grows. Each move should roughly double the soil volume, which is what roots respond to. The charcoal square pots pack tighter on a bench than round pots and hold more mix per footprint, and the matching saucers catch runoff indoors and on decks.

The two pot method

The oldest trick in the nursery trade works just as well at home: grow the plant in a plastic pot, then drop the whole thing inside a decorative outer. The grower pot handles the drainage, the good pot stays clean, and swapping a tired plant for a fresh one takes seconds. Keep a few sizes on hand to pair with our small pots and large planters, and remember that an upturned grower pot also makes the ideal false bottom inside a tall planter.

Making them last

These are UV stabilised production pots designed for season after season of use. Wash them between plantings with warm soapy water and dry them in the sun, which deals with most disease carryover, then store them stacked out of direct light. Common questions

What are 50mm tubes for?

Propagation. One tube per cutting or seedling gives the roots their own column of mix and makes potting on clean and quick. It is the standard tubestock size used by production nurseries across the country.

Do growers pots drain well enough?

Drainage is the whole point, with generous holes in the base. Add a saucer indoors, and skip the old advice about gravel in the bottom of the pot; it hinders drainage rather than helping.

Are they worth reusing?

Absolutely. At a few dollars each they are the cheapest gear in gardening, and a quick wash brings them back to service. Most gardeners build up a stack and never buy a seed tray again.
