Garden Art

Metal garden art gives a garden something that holds its shape all year, after the flowers finish and the perennials die back. This range covers more than 25 steel pieces: small animal stands, wall art and abstract sculptures. Most carry a natural rust patina. The decision that matters most is scale: work out where the piece will stand and how far away it will be seen from, then choose the size.

What the range covers

  • Art pieces, stands and wall art. Koalas, roosters, eagles, lizards, a snake and bullrushes with a dragonfly, most between 200mm and 760mm tall, plus wall pieces that hang from a hook or hold on with magnets. See the smaller art pieces.
  • Sculptures. Abstract cubes from 380mm high, a spring tree, a grass tree and an abstract angel that stands 2200mm tall.

How rusted steel behaves outdoors

The pieces are steel, and most have a natural rust patina. That patina is the finish: it keeps weathering outdoors and deepens in colour with rain and sun. When wet it can also mark pale paving, concrete and decking, so the better footing is soil, mulch, gravel or darker stone.

Placing steel among plants

Rust reads best against green. A cube sculpture gives a fixed, clean shape beside loose foliage such as grasses, ferns and clipped balls, and a lizard or snake belongs on a rockery or a log in a dry native bed. Tall, open pieces such as bullrushes and reeds add height at a pond edge without blocking the view. One piece per view is usually enough, placed at the end of a path or the turn of a bed where the eye already goes.

For the larger statement pieces, see garden sculptures. The same rusted steel also comes as bird baths, fire pits and outdoor garden furniture.

Common questions

Will the rust stain my paving?

It can. Water running off rusted steel leaves marks on pale paving, concrete and timber decking. Stand pieces on soil, mulch, gravel or darker stone, and keep hanging pieces over a garden bed.

Does metal garden art need maintenance?

Very little. The rust patina is the finish and is left alone to weather. There is nothing to paint, oil or seal.

How heavy are the pieces?

Lighter than they look. Cube sculptures weigh 8kg to 17kg and the tall abstract angel 36kg, so most can be placed by one or two people. The round tree and spring tree sculptures come apart to pack flat.

How do the wall pieces hang?

The bee hangs from a hook on its underside, and the gecko holds on with magnets under its feet as well as a hook. Delivered Australia wide.
