Metal Garden Art, Stands and Wall Art

A small steel piece is the simplest way to give a garden bed a point of interest that lasts through every season. This range covers freestanding animal stands, ornaments that rest on a rock or log, wall art and a hanging plant pod, all in mild steel with a natural rust patina. Sizes run from a 200mm group of mushrooms to a 760mm bullrush stand. The choice that matters is where the piece will live: on the ground, on a raised perch or on a wall.

Stands, ornaments and wall art

  • Freestanding stands. A sitting koala, a rooster, a sitting dragon and eagles at 400mm and 700mm tall. The bullrushes with a dragonfly (760mm) and the reeds with a robin (650mm) bring height to a pond edge or a bed of grasses.
  • Ornaments to lay down. Frill neck lizards at 380mm and 580mm from head to tail, a 700mm snake and a group of three mushrooms for the base of a tree.
  • Wall art. A large bee with a 500mm wingspan hangs from a fitted hook. The 520mm spotted gecko grips a steel shed, fence or post with magnets under its feet and has a hook for other surfaces.
  • Shapes and scenes. A round tree that comes apart to pack flat, a 5kg apple for a table or a stump, and two angelfish pieces for a coastal garden.
  • Hanging plant pod. 430mm in diameter and 920mm high, made in Australia, to hang under a verandah, a pergola or a branch.

Matching the piece to the planting

Choose a subject that suits what grows around it. The lizards and the snake belong on a rockery, a sleeper or a log in a dry native bed. The koala sits well at the base of a gum, the rooster in a vegetable garden, and the mushrooms under ferns in shade. The medium eagle is at its best raised on an old tree stump. Tall, slim pieces such as the angelfish in seagrass, 700mm tall and only 200mm wide, add height to a bed without taking width. Common questions

Will the rust mark my paving or wall?

It can. The patina keeps weathering outdoors, and when wet it can mark pale paving, tabletops and walls. Stand pieces on soil, mulch, gravel, rock or timber, and hang wall art on a darker fence or shed.

How do the wall pieces attach?

The bee has a hook fitted on its underside. The gecko has magnets under its feet for steel surfaces and a hook for everything else.

What should I plant in the hanging pod?

Something that trails. A lush green plant spilling over the edge is set off well by the rust, so look at cascading succulents in sun or a trailing fern in shade. The pod can mark pale paving beneath it when wet.
