Little John Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis 'Little John') is the dwarf bottlebrush for gardeners who would rather not prune. It settles at roughly 1m tall and 1m wide on its own, holds blue green foliage to ground level, and throws deep red brushes through spring with a lighter flush in autumn. Honeyeaters find it fast, and it is not toxic to cats or dogs.

Why you'll love it

  • It stays small without help. A mature plant sits at about 1m by 1m, so it never grows over a window or a path edge.
  • Bird traffic you can watch. The red brushes carry nectar, and honeyeaters work them from spring into autumn.
  • Genuinely tough. Frost hardy, drought tolerant, heat tolerant and salt tolerant in one small shrub.
  • Safe around pets. Not toxic to cats or dogs, so it suits a front garden the dog patrols.
  • One trim a year. Cut behind the spent brushes after flowering and it minds itself.

Where it works best

Low hedges and border edging. Plant 60cm apart in a single row. The canopies meet by the second season and hold a soft wall of 80cm to 1m along a driveway.

Mass planting. Set plants 60cm apart in a staggered grid on banks, median strips and dry front gardens, where the planting shades out most weeds.

Pots and small gardens. A pot 400mm or wider suits it for years, giving courtyards native flowers without the bulk of a full bottlebrush.

Growing Little John Bottlebrush in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun gives the heaviest flowering. Part shade is tolerated, though the plant opens up and flowers less. It suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate, Mediterranean and arid or semi-arid gardens, and is frost hardy once established.

Soil. Not fussy about type as long as water moves through. On heavy clay, plant on a raised mound and work compost through the bed. Keep 75mm of mulch over the roots and clear of the stems.

Water and feed. Deep soak once or twice a week through the first summer, then taper off. Feed a low phosphorus native fertiliser in early spring, since standard garden fertilisers carry more phosphorus than callistemons want.

Pruning. Trim straight after each flush, cutting behind the spent brushes into leafy wood. That one habit keeps the plant tight and flowering heavily instead of woody at the base.

What to expect when it arrives

It is grown in three sizes: tube stock, 140mm in packs of ten and 200mm in packs of six. Tube stock is young, usually a single stem under 20cm, and it is the sensible choice for a long edge or mass planting because small callistemons establish quickly. The 140mm and 200mm plants arrive branched and read as a low hedge within the first season.

One pack takes most orders past the minimum order of $300 before delivery. Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Expect three or four quiet weeks while the roots move out, then steady growth through the warm months and a first proper flush the following spring. Every plant carries our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

How far apart should I plant it for a low hedge?

Sixty centimetres apart in a single row. The canopies meet in the second season and the row reads as continuous, without the plants crowding or thinning at the base.

Will it stay at 1m without pruning?

Yes, in most gardens. Left alone it holds about 1m by 1m, and the annual trim keeps it dense rather than controlling its size.

Is it safe if my dog chews the leaves?

Callistemon is not toxic to cats or dogs, so a curious pet is not a problem. A dog that eats a lot of any foliage may still get an upset stomach.

Does it handle frost?

It is frost hardy once established, so cool temperate and inland gardens suit it. Shelter first year plants through their first winter.
