Little John Bottlebrush

Little John Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis 'Little John') is the dwarf bottlebrush for gardeners who would rather not prune. Position and climate. Full sun gives the heaviest flowering. Part shade is tolerated, though the plant opens up and flowers less. It suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate, Mediterranean and arid or semi-arid gardens, and is frost hardy once established.

Soil. Not fussy about type as long as water moves through. On heavy clay, plant on a raised mound and work compost through the bed. Keep 75mm of mulch over the roots and clear of the stems.

Water and feed. Deep soak once or twice a week through the first summer, then taper off. Feed a low phosphorus native fertiliser in early spring, since standard garden fertilisers carry more phosphorus than callistemons want.

Pruning. Trim straight after each flush, cutting behind the spent brushes into leafy wood. That one habit keeps the plant tight and flowering heavily instead of woody at the base.
