A septic drain field only works while the soil and the plants above it keep taking the water. Almost everything that goes wrong with one, from a soggy lawn to a blocked trench, traces back to roots getting into the pipes, shade and compaction cutting the evaporation, or too much water arriving at once. The one idea that matters most is simple: keep the area in mown grass or low, shallow-rooted plants in full sun, and keep every tree at least its mature height away.
This guide gathers what Australian regulators publish on the subject: the NSW Office of Local Government's 2025 Onsite Wastewater Management Guidelines, EPA Victoria's 2024 guidelines, the Queensland Plumbing and Wastewater Code, WA Health, council pages from New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia, and the older NSW Easy Septic Guide that many councils still hand out. It summarises their advice and is not a substitute for it. Requirements differ by state and council, so the installer or the council must be asked before anything on an approved area is changed.

How a drain field works, and why the plants on it matter
A septic tank settles the solids and passes the liquid on to a land application area. Regulators also call it an effluent application area, a drain field or, after its most common form, absorption trenches: gravel-filled trenches with slotted pipe laid below the surface, deeper than 300 mm in the Your Home guide's words. Evapotranspiration beds add a layer of sand and topsoil so water is drawn up by capillary action into the root zone of the grass on top. Secondary-treated effluent from an aerated system is usually spread through dripper lines or a small irrigation area instead.
The soil finishes the treatment. Plants, sun and wind pull the water back out, which EPA Victoria calls a vital role, and the NSW guideline says a managed lawn gives the highest evapotranspiration rate and is best practice for most areas. The plants above a trench can undo that in three ways.
- Roots. A trench is the wettest, richest soil on the block, and roots find it. The Queensland code requires a land application area to avoid root penetration of its pipes, because once a slotted pipe fills with roots the trench stops taking water.
- Shade. Tall vegetation and buildings cut evaporation, so the NSW guideline says the area should sit where sun and wind exposure is greatest.
- Compaction and sealing. WA Health notes that the weight of a vehicle compacts the soil and reduces its ability to absorb effluent. Paving, sheds and constant foot traffic do the same job more slowly.
What the authorities say about vegetation
- New South Wales. The Office of Local Government's guideline recommends managed lawn for most areas and says shrubs, ground covers, sedges and grasses that grow to 0.5 to 1 metre are appropriate on the area itself. Large trees and shrubs, and species with invasive roots, should not be planted on it.
- Victoria. EPA Victoria's effluent dispersal guideline says grass suits most systems and typically gives the best water and nutrient uptake in a home setting. Its vegetation table gives grass alone for absorption trenches, beds and evapotranspiration systems, and grass or gardens with plants and shrubs for irrigation areas. Large trees are not recommended because of root intrusion and the shade of a maturing canopy.
- Queensland. The Plumbing and Wastewater Code sets performance requirements rather than a plant list: the area must avoid root penetration and damage from loads placed on it, and must be designed from a site and soil evaluation under AS/NZS 1547, the standard designers in every state work to.
- Western Australia. WA Health requires an irrigation area to be planted with salt and nutrient tolerant plants so effluent does not pool or run off, says it is unsuitable for vegetable gardens or food crops, and says it cannot be altered or reduced without approval. The Shire of Mundaring names figs, ficus and willows as well known for doing great damage to septic systems.
- The Easy Septic Guide. This 2000 NSW booklet, still distributed by councils such as Blue Mountains, gives the rules most people know: full sun, grass kept mown with clippings removed, no concrete or pavers, no cars, no grazing, no sprinklers. It also suggests thirsty trees such as poplars and paperbarks planted down-slope and away from the trench to drink the surplus. The newer guidelines and the water utilities put those same trees on the danger list, and we side with them.
How far away trees must be
The NSW guideline gives the rule of thumb: plant a large tree at a distance from the area equal to its expected mature height, and keep the area at least a metre outside the drip line of any existing tree or shrub. The Easy Septic Guide is blunter, with small trees at least 5 metres away and large trees more than 20 metres, or the roots will harm the trench. Treat mature height as the minimum and double it for the water-seekers named below, since effluent draws roots further than dry ground would.
Where a tree is already too close, EPA Victoria's remedy is a root barrier: a narrow trench one metre deep, dug one metre to the side of the area on the tree side and lined with plastic. Soil and climate change the answer
- Heavy clay. Water leaves slowly, so the system leans on evaporation and plant uptake. Full sun and dense grass matter most here, and EPA Victoria lists gypsum on clayey soil as a first repair for a struggling area.
- Sand. Water drains fast and can carry nutrients and pathogens towards groundwater, which is why EPA Victoria does not recommend evapotranspiration beds in sandy soils. Grass and ground covers still earn their place by taking up nutrients on the way through.
- High rainfall. On the tropical and subtropical coast, and in the wet south of Tasmania and Victoria, the area is already wet for months, and EPA Victoria calls surface irrigation unsuitable there without wet-weather storage. Divert every roof and paddock flow around it.
- Dry inland, Perth and Adelaide. Evapotranspiration systems suit low rainfall, high evaporation and slow soils, in EPA Victoria's words, and here the plants do most of the work. Choose species that stay alive and transpiring through a hot summer on effluent alone, because sprinklers over the area are out.
What to plant, by role
Every plant here is shallow-rooted, non-woody or small, and tolerant of the wet, nutrient-rich soil above a trench. Absorption trenches and beds get grass or the low grassy natives; the irrigation area of an aerated system, and the margins of any field, can carry ground covers and small shrubs. Nothing in this list is for eating.
Grass and lawn alternatives for the area itself
- A mown lawn of whatever grass suits your climate is the regulators' first choice. Where a lawn will not take, these do the same work.
- Kidney weed (Dichondra repens): a creeping native lawn alternative for sun or part shade, happy in damp soil, that needs no more than an occasional mow.
- Native violet (Viola hederacea): on the Easy Septic Guide's own plant list; a soft mat for the damper, shadier corner of a field in the eastern states.
- Common tussock grass (Poa labillardieri): also on that list; takes heavy clay and wet feet, and suits cool and warm temperate country from Tasmania to the New South Wales tablelands.
- Kangaroo grass (Themeda australis): a low form for the drier margins and the reserve area in inland and Mediterranean climates; it dislikes wet feet, so keep it off an evapotranspiration bed.
Strappy natives for beds and edges
Fibrous-rooted, under a metre and unbothered by effluent, this is the group the NSW guideline had in mind. Our lomandra care guide and dianella care guide cover spacing and upkeep.
- Spiny-headed mat-rush (Lomandra longifolia): the most reliable strappy plant in the country for wet and dry alike, and on the Easy Septic Guide's list.
- Blue flax lily (Dianella brevipedunculata): the Queensland flax lily for the subtropical and tropical coast, where summer rain keeps the field wet.
- Flax lily (Dianella caerulea): the east coast species, tough in wet and dry soil alike, for temperate and subtropical gardens from Victoria to Queensland.
Ground covers for irrigation areas and the margins
- Creeping boobialla (Myoporum parvifolium): fast, flat and shallow-rooted, best in full sun in dry inland and Mediterranean climates.
- Fan flower (Scaevola Mauve Clusters): a low mat that flowers for months in sun; Scaevola is another genus on the Easy Septic Guide's list.
- Cut-leaf daisy (Brachyscome multifida): soft, shallow and quick, listed as Brachyscome in the same guide; trim after flowering.
- Austral bugle (Ajuga australis): for the damp, part-shaded margin in the south-east where boobialla would sulk.
- Pigface (Carpobrotus): a succulent for sandy, salty and dry sites from Perth to the Queensland coast; skip it on clay that stays wet.
Small shrubs for the down-slope margins, not the trench
Wollondilly Shire Council suggests grasses, small trees or small shrubs planted down-slope of the trench to help absorb the water. Keep shrubs to the margins and at the metre-or-under size the NSW guideline allows.
- Hop goodenia (Goodenia ovata): on the Easy Septic Guide's shrub list at 1 to 1.5 metres; loves moisture and suits Queensland to Tasmania.
- White correa (Correa alba): a coastal shrub for sandy soils in the southern states; fibrous roots, about a metre.
- Coastal rosemary (Westringia fruticosa): tough, salt-tolerant and non-invasive, for the outer margin where a 1.5 metre screen is wanted.
- Agapanthus (Agapanthus praecox): fleshy, shallow roots and near indestructible on the margin of an irrigation area. It is a garden escape in parts of New South Wales and Victoria, so deadhead it there or leave it out near bushland.

What to keep away
- Water-seeking trees. Willows, poplars, figs of every kind including the rubber tree, camphor laurel, umbrella tree, large gum trees, paperbarks and casuarinas. Mundaring names figs, ficus and willows outright; the utilities' ratings in our pipes guide cover the rest. We sell paperbarks and gums and think highly of them, but not within a mature height of a trench, and preferably twice that.
- Running bamboo and large lilly pilly. Both are rated high risk to sewers by the utilities and both will find a trench. A clumping bamboo or a dwarf lilly pilly on the far margin is a different matter.
- Fruit trees and anything edible. No vegetable beds, herbs, fruit or nut trees on or beside the area. Effluent can still carry pathogens after treatment, and EPA Victoria, WA Health and Wollondilly all say treated wastewater must not reach the edible parts of plants. Fruit trees also send roots straight to the trench.
- Raised beds, soil and mulch piles. The Easy Septic Guide says not to add topsoil over a trench to soak up overflow, or to store soil on it; a raised bed does both and buries the evaporating surface.
- Paving, sheds, patios, fences, playgrounds and service trenches. EPA Victoria lists all of these as things to keep off or away from the area.
- Vehicles, stock and heavy foot traffic. They compact the soil and can crush the pipes. A low fence or a planted edge tells visitors where not to walk.
- Sprinklers, hoses and stormwater. Do not flood the area with sprinklers or hoses, and never let roof or driveway water run onto it; the trench is already taking all the water it can.
Getting it right
- Find the plan. The council holds the approval and the drawing showing the trenches, the irrigation area and the reserve area. Mark the whole footprint before you plant anything.
- Plant straight after installation. Both the NSW and Victorian guidelines say to vegetate the area immediately, then check it each season to make sure nothing else has crept onto it.
- Mow and remove the clippings. Grass kept short and open dries the surface; clippings left in place seal it.
- Divert surface water. A bund about 15 centimetres high on the uphill side, longer than the trench field, turns runoff around it.
- Rest the trenches. Systems with two leach drains and a diverter should be switched every 12 months, as Mundaring advises.
- Keep the tank on schedule. A septic tank needs pumping out every three to five years; an aerated system needs a quarterly service by an authorised technician.
- Watch for failure. The Easy Septic Guide's checklist is soggy ground or pools downhill, a rotten-egg smell, unusually dark green grass on or around the area, weeds thriving downhill, and slow or backing-up drains. EPA Victoria adds dead or dying plants around the area. If you see them, do not dig and do not add soil: call a licensed plumber or drainer, or your system's service agent, and tell the council's environmental health officer if effluent is on the surface.
A word of caution
These are summaries of guidelines written for designers and councils, and every one of them says the right answer depends on the site, the soil and the system. Requirements vary by state and by council, and altering an approved land application area, including its size, its plants or what sits over it, can need approval or a permit. Ask the installer or the council's environmental health officer before you change anything, and treat any plant list, this one included, as a starting point rather than a ruling.
