Wildfire Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis 'Wildfire') pairs the classic red brushes with a soft weeping habit, so the screen sways instead of standing to attention. Hedging. It clips willingly into a 2m to 3m informal hedge, though constant hard shaping works against the weeping character that sets it apart.

Windbreaks. A row along an exposed boundary filters wind while feeding birds, a better outcome than a fence extension.

Growing Wildfire Bottlebrush in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun for the heaviest flowering and tightest growth. It suits tropical, subtropical and warm temperate gardens. It handles light frost once established, but in cold districts with regular hard frosts a hardier bottlebrush such as Kings Park Special is the safer screen.

Soil. Unfussy across sand, loam and clay, including ground that stays damp after rain. On a dry bank it manages once the roots are down.

Water and feed. Deep soak twice a week through the first summer, then taper away. A native controlled release fertiliser in spring keeps growth and flowering strong.

Pruning. Trim just behind the spent brushes after each flowering to thicken the plant while keeping the cascade. Avoid shearing it into tight geometry; that is what box hedges are for.

Does a weeping plant still make a solid screen?

Yes, with one honest caveat: the face is softer and a touch looser than a clipped hedge. Plant at 1.5m spacing and trim lightly after flowering and it fills to a dense, graceful wall.

How far apart should I plant it?

Space plants 1.5m apart for screening. For a freestanding feature, give a single plant about 3m clear of structures so the canopy can weep evenly all round.

Will it handle frost?

Light frost only, once established. In hard frost districts young plants burn, so this one is best from the warm temperate zone north.

Can it cope with a boggy spot?

Yes. It tolerates wet feet, which makes it one of the few graceful screens for the low, damp side of a block where drainage is never quite solved.
