White Knight Grevillea (Grevillea rosmarinifolia 'White Knight') is a bushy, rounded native shrub, about 1m tall and 1m wide, with slender needle-like foliage that looks like rosemary. Ivory-white cat's-claw flowers cover it through winter and spring, when most gardens could use the colour. It is small enough for a low hedge or a big pot, and tough enough to take frost down to -6C.
Why you'll love it
-
White flowers in winter. Ivory cat's-claw blooms through winter and spring lighten the cooler months.
-
Rosemary-like foliage. Fine, needle-like leaves give the shrub a dense, neat texture all year.
-
Compact and tidy. At about 1m by 1m it keeps a rounded shape and fits gardens that cannot take a big grevillea.
-
A wide climate range. It is happy in most locations from cold to subtropical and coastal, and tolerates temperatures down to -6C.
-
Good for wildlife. The nature-friendly blossoms support wildlife through the cooler months.
Where it works best
Low informal hedging. Plant 70cm apart in a row. The shrubs close into a soft hedge about 1m high, which suits front gardens and paths.
Pots and containers. Small enough to grow in a big pot on a patio. Use a free-draining mix and keep the pot where it gets sun.
Winter colour and wildlife gardens. Mix it with spring and summer flowering natives to keep nectar available all year.
Growing White Knight Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun or part shade. White Knight is happy from cold to subtropical gardens and by the coast, and tolerates temperatures down to -6C. That makes it suitable for subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean climates.
Soil. Well drained soil with a neutral pH. Mulch well to hold moisture and suppress weeds.
Water and feed. Mulch well and water regularly until the plant is established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas are sensitive to it.
Pruning. Prune lightly after flowering to promote new growth.
What to expect when it arrives
White Knight Grevillea is sold as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. For a hedge, tubes are an inexpensive way to buy several plants, and they settle in fast once the soil warms.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. If the tube shows as sold out, the grower has none at the moment, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
