Sunshine Dwarf Ixora (Ixora 'Sunshine') is a small, glossy evergreen that reaches only 50cm tall and 30cm wide, with clusters of sunny, sand-yellow flowers in spring and summer. It is made for tubs, pots, windowboxes and stepover hedges in subtropical gardens, and for a bright indoor spot in cooler places.
Why you'll love it
-
Soft golden-sand flowers. The colour is a gentle sand-yellow that lifts shaded corners and sits well beside green foliage.
-
Glossy, tidy leaves. Dense evergreen foliage keeps the shrub neat all year.
-
Right for small spaces. At 50cm tall it suits windowboxes, tubs and the front edge of a bed.
-
A cheerful hedge. Planted in a row, it clips into a low flowering hedge.
Where it works best
Tubs and windowboxes. Use a tub or windowbox with a drainage layer, one plant to every 30cm of length, in a bright spot.
Stepover hedges. Plant 30cm apart along a path or lawn edge for a low flowering border about half a metre high.
Indoors in cool regions. Where winters are cold, keep it in a pot next to a bright window and move it outdoors once the weather warms.
Growing Sunshine Dwarf Ixora in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade, in warm, frost free gardens. Ixoras prefer humid conditions, which is why they perform so well in the subtropics. They must be protected from frost, so in cooler regions treat this one as a container plant.
Soil. Well drained, slightly acid soil. Avoid alkaline soil, which causes yellowing of the leaves.
Water and feed. Water frequently, because ixoras like humidity. Leaves may turn yellow after an extended dry period, and a liquid seaweed fertiliser will help them regain their lush green colour.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to maintain dense growth.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Sunshine Dwarf Ixora as tube stock: a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly in warm soil. It is a good value way to fill a row of pots or a stepover hedge.
Tube stock is grown for us and availability varies. When the tube reads sold out, the grower has none, and the notify button on this page sends you an email the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
What colour are the flowers?
A sunny, sand-yellow to golden shade, held in rounded clusters above the glossy leaves.
How big will it get?
About 50cm tall and 30cm wide, so it stays small enough for windowboxes and tubs.
Does it need much water?
Yes. Ixoras like humidity, so water often, especially in pots, and mulch the soil in the garden.
