Ruby Jewel Grevillea (Grevillea 'Ruby Jewel') is a hardy native shrub, about 1m tall and 1.5m wide, with glowing red cat's-claw flowers through most of the warmer months. The leaves are small, oval and dark green, which is unusual for a grevillea and gives the plant a tidy look. It is low enough for a pot and wide enough for a small informal hedge.
Why you'll love it
-
Red flowers for months. Cat's-claw blooms open through most of the warmer months, so the show runs well beyond a single season.
-
Neat, un-grevillea-like leaves. Small, oval, pointed dark green leaves make a dense, calm backdrop for winter-flowering shrubs.
-
Frost hardy and waterwise. It is frost hardy and needs little water once established, which keeps care simple.
-
Shelter for small birds. The dense foliage gives cover to small birds, and the flowers suit native and wildlife gardens.
-
Works in a pot. Its size suits large pots and containers as well as garden beds.
Where it works best
Informal low hedging. Plant 1m apart in a single row. The shrubs overlap as they reach 1.5m wide and form a loose hedge about 1m high, easily shaped with a light clip.
Low maintenance gardens. Little water once established and a trim now and then is all it asks, so it suits busy gardeners.
Pots and containers. One plant fills a large pot. Use a free-draining mix and water more often than you would for plants in the ground.
Growing Ruby Jewel Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It is frost hardy and happy in cold winters and subtropical summers alike, so it suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens.
Soil. Well drained clay loam or sandy soil with a neutral to acid pH. Grevilleas cope with dry spells but resent waterlogging, so avoid low spots.
Water and feed. Water for the first 8 to 12 weeks until established, then very little. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, keeping the phosphorus under 3 per cent.
Pruning. Clip back to keep it in check. A light trim after the main flush of flowers keeps the shape dense, and hedge plants are shaped the same way.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Ruby Jewel Grevillea as tube stock (a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly) and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tubes are the economical choice for a hedge row, while the 140mm pots give a sturdier plant from the start.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When there is none, the tube shows as sold out, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How far apart should I plant Ruby Jewel for a hedge?
Plant 1m apart in a single row. At 1.5m wide, the plants overlap and close the gaps without crowding each other.
How big does Ruby Jewel get?
About 1m tall and 1.5m wide, so it is wider than it is tall. It is bigger all round than Lady O and smaller than Deua Flame.
Does it suit a pot?
Yes. Use a large pot with a free-draining mix and a native fertiliser that is low in phosphorus. Potted plants dry out faster, so check the moisture in summer.
