Red Clusters Grevillea (Grevillea rhyolitica x juniperina 'Red Clusters') is a compact, dense native shrub 75cm to 1m tall and about 1m wide. Neat dark leaves and slightly weeping stems form a rounded mound, and small dark red flowers open in the cooler months. Birds welcome the feed when little else is blooming.
Why you'll love it
-
Red flowers in the cool season. Dark red flowers open from winter through to spring, in the months when most gardens are quiet.
-
A neat, rounded shape. The dense mound needs very little pruning to look tidy.
-
Frost and drought tolerant. Once established and mature, it copes with both.
-
Feeds native birds. Small red flowers give birds a welcome meal in the cooler months.
-
Small enough for pots. At up to 1m by 1m it suits containers as well as garden beds.
Where it works best
Mass planting. Plant 70cm apart in drifts. The mounds touch within a few seasons, giving a tight, low planting that needs little attention.
Low informal hedges. Use a single row at the same spacing to make a soft, flowering edge along a path or border.
Containers and wildlife gardens. A pot by the door shows off the weeping stems, while a bed of natives gives birds a winter feed.
Growing Red Clusters Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. A warm, sunny position suits it best. Once established and mature it is frost and drought tolerant, so it is a reliable choice for temperate, cool and Mediterranean gardens.
Soil. Plant in well drained soil and mulch well. In pots, use a free draining mix.
Water and feed. Water regularly until the plant is established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas are sensitive to phosphorus.
Pruning. Little pruning is needed, because the shrub is compact. A light shaping after flowering helps maintain its bushiness and produces more buds.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Red Clusters Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Expect a small young plant that grows into a rounded mound over a season or two. Plant in a sunny spot, mulch around it and keep it watered through its first summer. Our grower does not always have tube stock to send. When the tube reads sold out, the notify button on the page will email you the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
