Pure Harmony White French Lavender (Lavandula dentata 'Pure Harmony') is a scented shrub about 1.2m high and 1m wide, with slender serrated grey-green leaves and white flowers in spring. It has the fragrance of purple French lavender in a softer colour, though without quite as many of the ear-like tufts. It suits borders, pots and hedging, and it makes a lovely companion plant.
Why you'll love it
-
White flowers on grey-green leaves. A softer, cooler look than purple lavender, which pairs well with almost any colour.
-
A distinctive fragrance. Bees and butterflies love the scent, and so do gardeners.
-
Good for borders and pots. It is ideal for borders and container planting.
-
A useful companion. It sits well beside purple lavender and other cottage garden plants.
-
Taller than many. At 1.2m it makes a more substantial hedge than the smaller lavenders.
Where it works best
Borders and white gardens. Plant 70cm apart for a scented hedge or a border. The white flowers suit a cool-toned planting.
Pots and containers. It grows well in a large pot on a sunny terrace.
Cottage gardens. Plant it alongside purple lavender and roses for a gentle contrast.
Hedging. A single row at 70cm spacing makes a scented hedge about 1.2m high.
Growing Pure Harmony White French Lavender in Australia
Position and climate. Choose a sunny, north-facing spot in full sun. French types generally handle warmth better than English lavender. It will tolerate lower light, although flowering will be affected, and it tolerates light frost once established.
Soil. Free-draining soil, preferably on the alkaline side. Avoid wet feet.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly for the first 12 weeks until the plant establishes. Fertilise once a year with a slow release fertiliser after flowering to maintain compact growth.
Pruning. Clip over twice a year, taking only a third of the foliage and avoiding old wood, to keep the plant compact.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Pure Harmony White French Lavender as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Plant it out soon after arrival in a sunny, well-drained spot and water it in. Expect it to bush out and flower as it matures.
The Pure Harmony White French Lavender tube is grown for us by our grower, and availability comes and goes. If it shows as sold out, press the notify button on the page and we will email you the day it is available again. Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Common questions
How is it different from purple French lavender?
The flowers are white rather than purple. It doesn't have quite the ear tufts of the purple kind, but it carries the same fragrance and makes a lovely companion plant.
What soil does it like?
Free-draining soil, on the alkaline side if possible. Avoid wet feet, because waterlogging is what shortens a lavender's life.
Does it tolerate frost?
It tolerates light frost once established. In harsher frost districts, plant it in a sheltered, sunny spot.
