Perth Pink Bottlebrush (Callistemon salignus 'Perth Pink') is a large native shrub, 2m to 4m high and 3m to 4m wide, that covers itself in hot pink brushes in spring and again in autumn. The new growth is pink too, so there is colour in between. It is a bold choice for a tall informal hedge, a windbreak or a coastal planting that draws nectar-feeding birds.
Why you'll love it
-
Two flowering seasons. Hot pink brushes appear in spring and again in autumn.
-
Pink new growth. Fresh shoots also come in pink, which keeps the shrub colourful between flowerings.
-
Real size. At up to 4m high and wide it makes a substantial screen, and it fills a large space quickly.
-
Popular with birds. Nectar-feeding birds are drawn to the flowers in native and coastal gardens.
-
Copes with wet and dry. Established plants tolerate both drought and waterlogging.
Where it works best
Tall informal hedges and screens. Plant 2m apart in a row. At that spacing the shrubs overlap within a few seasons into a tall, loose screen with pink flowers on show twice a year.
Windbreaks. Its size and bushy growth make it useful along an exposed boundary, where a row takes the force out of the wind.
Coastal and native gardens. It suits coastal landscapes and wildlife plantings, and gives year-round interest through its flowers and coloured new growth.
Growing Perth Pink Bottlebrush in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade suits it. It is not frost hardy, although it may come through a light overnight frost, so choose a sheltered spot in cold districts and avoid frost pockets. It suits subtropical, warm temperate and Mediterranean gardens.
Soil. Plant it in well drained soil. Once established it tolerates both drought and waterlogging, but it grows best in free draining ground with some watering in dry periods.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until established, usually around 12 weeks. After that, water through dry periods to keep the flowering strong.
Pruning. Leave it unpruned for a natural, billowing shape, or trim to tidy the growth or reduce its size. Prune to shape while it is young and again after flowering to improve the next flowering.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Perth Pink Bottlebrush as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and in 200mm pots in packs of 6. Tubes are the economical choice for a long hedge or windbreak, while the 200mm plants give you more height from the first season. Plants travel upright and settle in within a few weeks in warm soil.
Tube stock is supplied by our grower and is not always on hand. If the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
