Ice N Roses Rose Hellebore (Helleborus x glandorfensis 'Ice N Roses Rose') opens white at the heart of each flower and shades to deep pink at the edges, an ombre effect with real depth. It forms a robust clump about 50cm high and wide and flowers from winter into spring. It comes from a newer hybrid group bred for bigger flowers and better sun tolerance.
Why you'll love it
-
Ombre flowers. White at the centre, deepening to rose pink at the petal tips, so one clump carries a range of shades at once.
-
Handles more sun. Bred to tolerate more sun than the older hellebores, so it suits brighter beds as well as shade.
-
Held up to be seen. The blooms sit high on their stems above the glossy, deep green leaves, so they face you instead of hiding.
-
Vigorous and adaptable. A robust grower that is frost hardy, copes with a range of garden soils and needs little beyond water and an autumn tidy-up.
Where it works best
Borders in part shade. Plant 50cm apart in a drift along a shady fence or the edge of a lawn. The pink tones are easy to partner with greys and greens.
Winter pots. A big pot on a sheltered patio keeps the colour at eye level, and you can move it somewhere cooler once the weather warms.
Under shrubs and small trees. It flowers while deciduous shrubs are bare and settles into their shade when summer arrives.
Growing Ice N Roses Rose Hellebore in Australia
Position and climate. Sun to part shade, protected from strong winds. In cool southern gardens it will take a sunny position with plenty of water; in warmer gardens choose morning sun with afternoon shade. It is frost hardy. In humid coastal gardens, where summers trouble hellebores, grow it in a pot in deep shade.
Soil. Good, moist, well-drained soil. Dig in compost before planting and keep the crown level with the surface so it does not sit in wet soil.
Water and feed. Water regularly until established and keep the soil moist through dry spells, particularly in a sunny spot. Mulch to keep the shallow roots cool in summer, and give a liquid feed regularly to support flowering.
Pruning. Deadhead to prolong the flowering season. Cut old, untidy leaves off at the base in autumn so the new flowers show properly.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Ice N Roses Rose Hellebore as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. The tube is the value way to plant several, and it will build a clump over a season or two before it flowers at full strength. Plant it out soon after it arrives and keep it moist.
Our grower does not always have tubes to send. When there are none, the tube option reads as sold out, and pressing the notify button on this page means an email reaches you on the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How much sun can Ice N Roses Rose take?
More than the classic hellebores, since the Ice N Roses hybrids were bred for sun tolerance. In hot areas, still give it afternoon shade, and water it more in any sunny spot.
Is it dangerous to pets or children?
It can be. All parts of a hellebore are toxic if eaten, and the sap may irritate skin. Plant it where pets and small children do not dig, and wear gloves when pruning.
When is the best time to plant it?
Autumn is ideal in most gardens, so the clump settles before it flowers. In frosty areas you can plant in spring, then protect the young plant with mulch.
