Ice N Roses Picotee Hellebore (Helleborus x glandorfensis 'Ice N Roses Picotee') has ice-white flowers with each petal finely edged in pale pink. It is a newer cross of two hellebore lines, bred for larger flowers and more sun tolerance than the classic types, and it forms a rounded clump about 50cm high and wide. Flowering starts early, from winter into spring.
Why you'll love it
-
Pink-edged petals. Each white petal carries a fine pink border, so the flowers look delicate up close and bright from across the garden.
-
Larger flowers. The Ice N Roses hybrids were bred for bigger blooms, and they are held high above the glossy foliage.
-
More sun tolerance. It takes brighter positions than the older hellebores, which gives you more choice about where to plant it.
-
Robust and vigorous. A strong, adaptable plant that is frost hardy, copes with a range of garden conditions and asks for little beyond water and a tidy-up.
Where it works best
Light shade under trees. Plant 50cm apart beneath deciduous trees or shrubs. The white and pink brighten a dull winter corner and the leaves shade the roots in summer.
Cottage garden borders. The soft colouring pairs well with silver foliage, ferns and white-flowered winter plants.
Patio planters. One plant in a large pot gives a good display from winter into spring. Move it to a shadier spot when the weather warms.
Growing Ice N Roses Picotee Hellebore in Australia
Position and climate. It takes sun to part shade, with shelter from strong wind. Because it is more sun tolerant than classic hellebores, Picotee takes brighter positions, though afternoon shade is the safer choice where summers are hot. It is frost hardy. Hot, humid summers are the real test, and in the humid subtropics a pot in shade is the sensible way to grow it.
Soil. Moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost. If your soil is heavy, raise the bed slightly so water does not sit around the crown.
Water and feed. Water regularly while it settles in, and again through dry spells; the sunnier the position, the more water it needs. Mulch each spring to keep the shallow roots cool, and feed with a liquid fertiliser regularly through the growing season.
Pruning. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong the display, and cut tatty old leaves off at the base in autumn before the flower stems rise.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Ice N Roses Picotee Hellebore as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and in 200mm pots in packs of 6. A tube is the economical way to plant a drift, while the 200mm pots give you a bigger plant from the start and suit a patio display. Plants travel upright and are best planted out promptly.
Tube stock is supplied by our grower and is not always on hand. If the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out here, and the notify button on this page emails you the day it returns.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How is Picotee different from other hellebores?
It belongs to the Ice N Roses group of hybrids, bred for larger flowers, more sun tolerance and robust growth. The flowers are white with each petal edged in pale pink.
Is Ice N Roses Picotee toxic to pets?
Yes. All parts of the plant are poisonous if eaten, and the sap may irritate bare skin. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children, and wear gloves to cut it back.
How far apart should I plant it?
Fifty centimetres apart. That matches its mature width, so the clumps just touch and fill in as a drift without crowding each other.
