Hellebores and Winter Roses

Hellebores flower in the depth of winter, in the shade, where almost nothing else will. Known as winter roses, they hold cupped flowers in white, cream, pink and deep red above leathery evergreen leaves from early winter into spring, and each flower lasts for weeks. Once settled they live for many years and ask for very little. This range covers modern selections with larger, outward facing flowers. Every plant is delivered Australia wide.

How to choose a hellebore

The plants here are modern Helleborus hybrids, bred to hold their flowers up and out rather than nodding. Ice n Roses Merlot is the largest, about 50cm tall, with deep wine red flowers. Molly's White pairs white flowers with marbled silver green leaves that are a feature all year. Cinnamon Snow opens cream and ages to a warm pink. Ice Breaker Max starts white and turns green as it matures, and Marlon and Winter Ballet Katie are compact plants around 35cm to 40cm that suit pots and the front of a border.

Where hellebores work

They are plants for cool and temperate gardens: Tasmania, Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, Canberra, the tablelands and the cooler parts of Sydney and Perth. Give them dappled or part shade, ideally under deciduous trees where they get winter light and summer cover. The soil should hold moisture and drain well. They are frost hardy. Use them in drifts under trees, beside a shaded path or in pots by a door where the flowers can be seen in winter. See more options in plants for partial shade and plants for cool climates.

Planting and spacing

Plant 40cm to 50cm apart with plenty of compost dug through. Set the crown at soil level and mulch with leaf litter or fine bark. Autumn is the best time to plant. Water weekly through the first summer.

Care basics

In late autumn, cut away the old, tattered leaves at the base so the new flowers show. Feed in autumn and again after flowering with a slow release fertiliser. Keep them watered through dry summers. Hellebores dislike being moved, so choose the position with care. The hellebore care guide covers this in full.

Common questions

When do hellebores flower?

From early winter into spring, usually June to September, with each flower lasting several weeks.

Do hellebores grow in full shade?

They flower best in dappled or part shade. In deep shade they grow well but carry fewer flowers.

Are hellebores evergreen?

Yes. The leathery leaves stay on the plant all year.

Can hellebores grow in pots?

Yes. Use a deep pot and a quality mix, keep it in shade through summer and do not let it dry out.
