Chrysalis Pink Buddleia (Buddleja davidii 'Chrysalis Pink') is a thigh high butterfly bush with warm pastel pink flowers. It grows only 50cm to 70cm tall and 45cm to 60cm wide, and its honey scented spikes open from plum purple buds with orange centres from early summer to late autumn. It was bred for abundant flowers on compact plants.
Why you'll love it
-
A soft, warm pink. The mid pink flowers carry orange centres and open from plum purple buds, so each spike shows two tones at once.
-
A long season. Flowers arrive in early summer and persist through to late autumn, a rare run for a small shrub.
-
Small enough for anywhere. At thigh height it fits a pot, a narrow bed or the front of a border.
-
Butterflies and bees visit. Honey scent and nectar draw butterflies, bees and birds to the garden.
-
Resists downy mildew. The Chrysalis line is bred for mildew resistance, which keeps plants looking fresh.
Where it works best
Informal mixed borders. Plant 60cm apart for a soft, flowing band of pink. It blends with silver leaved plants, white daisies and other cottage favourites.
Patio containers. A single plant fills a medium pot, and a pair makes a pleasing entry display. Water pots more often than garden plants.
Mass planting. Set plants 60cm apart in a drift for a low sweep of pink that suits small, sunny front gardens.
Growing Chrysalis Pink Buddleia in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It is frost and drought tolerant, so it suits cool, temperate and subtropical gardens. More sun means more flowers.
Soil. Free draining soil suits it. It is not fussy, but heavy ground should be raised or lightened with coarse compost.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly for the first 12 weeks or so, then rely on rainfall in the garden. Feed with slow release fertiliser after pruning, and add a seaweed tonic during the summer heat.
Pruning. Cut it hard once a year, in late winter or early spring as new growth starts. This removes old shoots and keeps the plant compact and floriferous. Deadhead spent spikes, because buddleias may self seed in some districts.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Chrysalis Pink Buddleia as tube stock only: a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives as a small, leafy plant, and in warm weather it grows fast, often flowering in its first summer. Plant in a sunny spot with free draining soil, or pot it into quality mix.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
What colour are the flowers exactly?
A warm pastel pink. The spikes open from plum purple buds, and the individual flowers show orange centres, so the effect is a layered mid pink rather than a flat one.
How big will it be?
Thigh high, at 50cm to 70cm tall and 45cm to 60cm wide, which makes it one of the smallest buddleias you can grow.
How do I keep it flowering all season?
Give it full sun, prune hard in late winter, feed after pruning and add a seaweed tonic in summer heat. Snipping off faded spikes also encourages new ones.
