Solar Bollard and Path Lights

Bollards do the plainest job in garden lighting: they show where the path goes. This range of solar bollard and path lights runs from low twin packs for a garden edge to 800mm commercial bollards that bolt to paving, and every one charges from the sun with no wiring and no electrician. Choose the height first, because a bollard shorter than the plants around it lights the inside of a shrub while its panel sits in shade.

Height and how it mounts

The shorter lights stand 450mm to 500mm and suit lawn edges, low groundcovers and the sides of a gate. The 847mm and 940mm bollards stand above low shrubs and border plants, and the 2 in 1 model sets up as an 800mm bollard or an 1800mm post light. Spike mounted bollards push into a garden bed or lawn edge, and several also surface mount onto paving or decking. The commercial bollards bolt down, so they need a slab or paved edge to sit on.

Marker light or path light

  • 20 to 140 lumens. Markers that define an edge: the twin pack bollards, the Comet path lights and the five light kit.
  • 200 to 350 lumens. Enough to light the path surface: the 940mm bollards, the commercial models and the stainless steel sensor bollard.
  • 800 to 1000 lumens. The Elegant sensor bollard and the Orbit, for entries and wider areas.

The square 940mm bollard has four settings from 50 to 200 lumens, the Orbit dims by remote control, and the stainless steel and Elegant sensor bollards hold a low light and brighten as someone passes. Several models switch between 3000K, 4000K and 6000K.

Spacing, sun and sites near water

Set soft markers 2 to 3 metres apart and brighter bollards further apart, staggered from side to side so the path does not read as a runway. The panel is built into each light, so keep overhanging foliage trimmed back. The exception is the five light kit, cabled at 6 metres between bollards and run from one remote panel: the lights can stand in shade along a hedge while the panel sits in full sun. Beside a pool or waterfront, the round polycarbonate bollard is the one made for corrosion prone sites.

Common questions

Will a bollard light the whole path?

A marker bollard shows the edge, not the surface. To see the ground, pick 200 lumens or more and space the lights closer, or use a sensor model that lifts to full output when someone approaches.

What if the path is shaded?

Built-in panels need direct sun for most of the day, ideally open to the north. Under trees, use the kit with the remote panel, or raise a residential bollard on the 1m aluminium post so foliage does not shade it.

Can I light the plants as well as the path?

Yes. To pick out a tree or a hedge behind the path, add solar spotlights and uplighters from the wider garden lighting range. Delivered Australia wide.
