Solar Festoon Lights
Festoon lights are the quickest way to make a deck, pergola or courtyard feel like a place to sit after dark. The Solar Festoon Light Kit is a string of G45 filament LED bulbs on black cable, run from a remote solar panel with its own battery pack, so there is no wiring and no electrician involved. The thing to get right is the panel: it goes where the sun is, and the lights go where the people are.
More information
Choosing a length and colour
The bulbs sit 1 metre apart, and the kit comes as 10 warm white lights, 20 warm white lights or 20 coloured lights. Measure the run before you choose, allowing for a gentle swag between fixing points. Each bulb gives 20 lumens at 1 metre, a glow for atmosphere and not a work light. Four pre-set operation modes change the effect.
Hanging festoons in a garden
Mount the panel on its spike or on a surface in a spot with direct sun for most of the day, ideally open to the north, then hang the string in shade or under cover. Fix the cable at regular points so that no long span carries its own weight. Strung through a pergola with a climber growing over it, the bulbs light the foliage from within.
Common questions
Can the lights hang under a roofed patio?
Yes. Only the panel needs sun, and because it is separate from the string it can stand in the garden while the lights hang under cover.
Are festoon lights bright enough to eat by?
They give a soft glow at 20 lumens a bulb. Over a dining table, hang the string low and close overhead, and add a solar wall light nearby if you want more light.
What if a bulb breaks?
The bulbs are screw-in E27 filament LEDs, and every kit includes spares. See the full garden lighting range for paths, steps and feature plants. Delivered Australia wide.
