Solar Wall and Pillar Lights

Wall lights work at the points where house and garden meet: the front entry, the side path, the courtyard wall behind a planted bed. This range of solar wall and pillar lights covers soft marker lights, up and down lights that graze a wall, motion sensor lights for entries, and pillar lights for gate posts. All are solar, so there is no cable to run and no electrician to book, and the decision that matters is how much sun that wall or pillar gets.

Check the sun on the wall first

A wall light charges where it hangs. A north facing wall is the best position, east and west walls get half a day, and a south facing wall or a spot under deep eaves will struggle. Shade from a climber or a tall shrub counts too, so mount the light clear of foliage. Pillar lights have it easier: the top of a gate pier is usually in the open.

Marker, wall wash or sensor light

  • Soft markers, 50 to 60 lumens. The Space and the Elegant give an ambient glow for a wall, an entry or a path edge.
  • Up and down lights, 100 to 500 lumens. Beams graze the wall above and below the fitting and bring out the texture of brick, stone or timber cladding. The Wedge, Slim and Adjustable give 100 lumens, the Expansive 300 and the Stylish 500.
  • Motion sensor lights, 200 to 1000 lumens. Most hold a low glow and brighten when someone approaches, which suits entries and side paths. The Decorative and the Designer are rated at 1000 lumens.

Most wall lights here are warm white, which is kinder to foliage and natural materials. Several sensor models come in warm or cool white, and the Smart switches between 3000K, 4000K and 6000K.

Pillar lights

The pillar lights fix to the flat top of a gate post, pier or wall end. The Modern stands 450mm high at 300 to 330 lumens, the Decorative sets a 300mm opal sphere on a black frame for a soft 200 lumen glow, and the Square gives 700 lumens in two sizes. A pair on the gate pillars marks a driveway entry and sits well above a low hedge.

Common questions

How high should a solar wall light go?

About 1.6 to 1.8 metres beside a door, and lower, around knee to waist height, for marker lights along a path or steps. Up and down lights need clear wall above and below to show their beams.

Are solar wall lights bright enough for a front door?

The sensor lights are. From 240 lumens up they light a doorstep and lock, and the 1000 lumen models light the approach as well. Markers and up and down lights are for atmosphere, not for finding keys.
