Yamba Sunshine Grevillea (Grevillea 'Yamba Sunshine') is a large tree-shrub, 3 to 4m tall and 2 to 3m wide, with ferny foliage and abundant, classic spider flowers in soft yellow. Native birds find the blooms quickly, lorikeets especially. Plant it as a feature in a native or wildlife garden where it has the room to grow.
Why you'll love it
-
Soft yellow spider flowers. Large, classic grevillea flowers in a sunny pale yellow open in abundance, and they stand out against the ferny green foliage.
-
Lorikeet and honeyeater magnet. Native birds love it, and lorikeets in particular come in numbers, which makes it a lively centrepiece for a wildlife garden.
-
Ferny foliage. The finely divided leaves give the big shrub a light, soft texture.
-
A brighter Honey Gem. It is similar to the popular Honey Gem, but the flowers are a clear soft yellow rather than orange.
-
Dry spells are no problem. Once established it tolerates dry periods, so it asks little of you.
Where it works best
Feature planting. Use it as a single specimen or a pair. Allow 3m of clear space on every side, because the mature shrub is 3 to 4m tall and up to 3m wide.
Native and bird gardens. Plant it with other nectar-bearing natives to build a garden that feeds birds through the year.
Layered yellow plantings. Underplant it with lower growing grevilleas in yellow and gold shades for a layered display at different heights.
Growing Yamba Sunshine Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun gives the most flowers, and light shade is tolerated. It copes with dry periods once established and suits subtropical and warm temperate gardens. No frost rating is published for it, so in cold gardens plant it in a sheltered position.
Soil. Free-draining soil. Raise the planting spot a little if your ground holds water.
Water and feed. Water regularly through the first 8 to 12 weeks until established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, and keep the phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas are sensitive to it.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to promote more flowers, keep the habit dense and control size. A hard prune every three to four years brings a fresh flush of flowers and foliage.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Yamba Sunshine Grevillea as tube stock (a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly), in 140mm pots in packs of 10 and in 300mm pots. The 300mm pots are the quickest way to get a feature shrub with presence, while tubes are the best value if you are planting several.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the tube shows as sold out, the grower has none at the moment, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How does Yamba Sunshine compare with Honey Gem?
They are similar large grevilleas with classic spider flowers. Yamba Sunshine is the brighter one, with soft yellow flowers where Honey Gem is more orange.
How big does it get?
Between 3 and 4m tall and 2 to 3m wide, so give it plenty of room and keep it out of narrow beds.
When should I prune it?
Straight after flowering. Pruning then promotes more flowers and keeps the habit dense, and a hard prune every three to four years renews an older plant.
