White Princess Philodendron (Philodendron 'White Princess') is a large foliage plant whose glossy, heart-shaped leaves are apple green with random splashes of paler green and white. In a frost free garden it can reach 3m high and wide, and in a pot it is far more compact. It is a distinctive choice for shaded tropical planting and bright homes.
Why you'll love it
-
No two leaves alike. The white and pale green splashes are random and variable, and they develop as the plant matures. An occasional leaf may come through all green.
-
Large, glossy foliage. The heart-shaped leaves have a polished finish and give a tropical look that few shade plants match.
-
Indoors or out. It works as a pot plant in a bright room and as a border plant in a frost free garden.
-
Brightens shade. Pale variegation lifts the dark corners where plain green foliage disappears.
-
Bold on its own. One well grown plant in a good pot is a feature without any companions.
Where it works best
Tropical borders. Plant 1.5m apart along a shaded border in a frost free garden. The plants grow into one another and form a continuous mass of leaf.
Shaded underplanting. Use it beneath taller trees and palms where direct sun does not reach, and where shelter from wind keeps the leaves intact.
Indoor pots. Choose a large pot near a bright window, out of direct sun. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth when dust collects, and repot at the start of spring.
Growing White Princess Philodendron in Australia
Position and climate. A sheltered spot that avoids direct sun, with bright filtered light. It is frost free and needs to stay above 15C, so outdoors it suits tropical and subtropical gardens. In cooler climates grow it indoors or in a pot that comes inside for winter.
Soil. Free draining soil rich in organic matter, or a good potting mix. Mulch the surface to hold moisture.
Water and feed. Mulch, and water regularly for the first 12 weeks. Keep it moist in dry periods, and mist regularly because it thrives in humid air. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring, and a liquid feed every 2 to 4 weeks in warm months, diluted to half strength so the leaves do not burn.
Pruning. Little is needed beyond removing old or damaged leaves. Avoid skin contact with the sap, so wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell White Princess Philodendron as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, in 140mm pots in packs of 10, in 200mm pots in packs of 6 and in 300mm pots. The tube is a small starter, and the 300mm pot gives you a substantial plant already showing its leaf patterns. Pot up or plant out soon after delivery.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Will the white splashes stay?
They develop as the plant grows, and the pattern is random. Bright, filtered light brings out the contrast, and a leaf now and then may be plain green.
Is it safe for pets and children?
No. The leaves contain a poisonous substance, so keep it away from play areas for children and pets. Avoid skin contact with the sap and wash your hands after handling.
How large will it grow in a pot?
Much smaller than its 3m garden size. Its final height depends on the pot, the light and how much you feed it.
