The White Gavin Planter is a round, textured plastic pot in white, carrying the ridged linear detailing of the Gavin range and a drainage hole in the base. Three sizes are available, 350mm, 460mm and 550mm across, holding roughly 22 to 26, 40 to 45 and 85 to 95 litres of mix. It is the low, wide shape in the range, which suits mounding shrubs better than a tall pot does.

Why you'll love it

  • Wide rather than tall. The proportions are broad and low, so the planting sits above the rim as a full mound instead of perching on a column.
  • Serious soil volume. The 550mm holds 85 to 95 litres, enough for a large shrub or a small tree to grow on for years without being cramped.
  • Light enough to place alone. Plastic construction means one person can carry the empty pot into position and set it level.
  • Weather resistant finish. Designed for reliable outdoor performance, and listed for indoor rooms as well.

Sizes and what fits in them

Three sizes, named for the width across the widest point.

  • 350mm. 35cm across, 29cm high, about 22 to 26 litres. Decorative foliage and compact plants.
  • 460mm. 46cm across, 34cm high, about 40 to 45 litres. Shrubs and single statement plants.
  • 550mm. 55cm across, 45cm high, about 85 to 95 litres. Large shrubs and small trees.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. White plastic with a textured surface. Maintenance is a rinse with water or a wipe with a damp cloth, and nothing beyond that.

Outdoors. Designed to withstand year-round outdoor conditions in gardens, courtyards, patios and balconies, and also listed for indoor use. In a windy, elevated position, plant something low and dense rather than a tall narrow specimen, because a light pot carrying a big sail on top will eventually go over.

Drainage. A built-in drainage hole is included, so excess water leaves instead of sitting around the roots. No saucer comes with it, so indoors, or on a balcony with a neighbour below, buy one to match.

What to expect when it arrives

Pots ship empty, without mix, plant or saucer, and are packed to travel. Put it where it is going to live before you fill it, particularly the 550mm: 85 to 95 litres of wet potting mix is a two person lift at best. Pots are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
