Tulameen Raspberry (Rubus idaeus 'Tulameen') is a late season, thornless raspberry grown for large, red, richly flavoured summer berries. The upright canes reach about 1.5m high and wide and are very frost hardy, which suits the cool climates where raspberries crop best. Plants fruit from their second year, and an established patch harvests over a long season.
Why you'll love it
-
Big, flavourful berries. Large red fruit with a rich, old-fashioned raspberry flavour, sweet enough to eat straight from the cane.
-
Thornless canes. Picking is easy and painless, which matters in a family garden.
-
Late season harvest. It crops later than many varieties, and the picking season is long once the plant is established.
-
Very frost hardy. Cold winters do not trouble it, and a chilly winter helps it crop.
-
Leaves for tea. The leaves can be dried and used for herbal tea.
Where it works best
Trellis and wires. Plant 50cm apart along a trellis or taut wires. Train the canes up to the top, then tie new growth pointing down, which raises yields and takes up less room.
Large pots. Where the garden soil is alkaline, grow one plant in a large pot of acidic mix, with a stake or small trellis.
Edible gardens. It sits well in a fruit and vegetable patch beside other berries, where it can be netted against birds.
Growing Tulameen Raspberry in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun, with lots of light. It fruits best in cooler climates with regular rainfall, so cool temperate gardens suit it best. In warm temperate gardens expect a lighter crop, and in the subtropics and tropics it is not a good choice.
Soil. A relatively free draining, acid to neutral soil. Mulch with compost or bark to hold moisture and feed the roots.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until established, and water at the roots whenever the plant is in flower and fruit. Feed with compost or a berry fertiliser in spring.
Pruning. Cut all canes that have fruited down to ground level in early to mid autumn, so new growth can form.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Tulameen Raspberry as tube stock: a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly once potted on or planted out. Expect a modest first year as the canes build, because raspberries fruit from their second year. Plants travel upright, and are best planted soon after arrival into prepared, mulched soil.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out, and the notify button on this page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
When will it fruit?
From the second year. Raspberries fruit on second year canes, then you cut those down after harvest and train new ones.
Can I grow it in a pot?
Yes, in a large pot of acidic mix, with a stake or trellis. This is the answer where garden soil is alkaline.
Will it grow in a warm climate?
It prefers cool climates with regular rainfall. In warm temperate gardens expect a lighter crop, and in the subtropics it is best avoided.
