Stella D'Oro Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Stella D'Oro') is a compact, clumping perennial about 30cm tall and wide, with clear golden-yellow, lily-like flowers held above arching strappy leaves. Each bloom lasts a day, but every stem carries several buds, so the plant flowers over a long season. One caution: daylilies are highly toxic to cats, so skip it if cats visit your garden.
Why you'll love it
-
A long flowering season. Individual flowers last only a day, but each stem carries multiple blooms and the plant keeps producing them over a long period.
-
Clear golden colour. A clean, bright yellow with a gentle fragrance, easy to place against green foliage.
-
Compact. At 30cm by 30cm it suits narrow borders, path edges and large pots.
-
Easy to please. It is adaptable to most soil types and pH levels, frost hardy once established, and needs very little care when planted in plenty of compost.
-
Sun or shade. It wants at least half a day of full sun, but will grow in shade where flowering is reduced.
Where it works best
Borders and pathways. Plant 30cm apart in groups or a continuous line along a border or path. The clumps merge into a ribbon of green foliage and gold flowers.
Large pots. Suitable for large pots, where a group of plants makes a mass of colour on a patio or at an entry.
Under shady trees. As a groundcover below trees it gives a neat mass of strappy leaves, with fewer flowers than in full sun.
Growing Stella D'Oro Daylily in Australia
Position and climate. At least half a day of full sun gives the best flowering, though it grows in shade with fewer flowers. It is frost hardy once established and suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens. In cold winters the foliage may die back and reshoot in spring.
Soil. Very adaptable as to soil type and pH. Dig in plenty of compost at planting for the best start.
Water and feed. Mulch and water well, especially in dry periods and during spring growth, so that flower buds develop properly.
Pruning. No pruning is needed. Remove spent flower stems and tidy dead leaves to keep clumps neat.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Stella D'Oro Daylily as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Tubes are the economical way to plant a long border, and plants settle in within a few weeks of planting. Expect a small clump on arrival that bulks up over the first seasons.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Is Stella D'Oro safe for cats?
No. Daylilies are highly toxic to cats, and eating a leaf or flower, or even licking pollen off fur, can cause kidney failure. Keep them out of any garden cats can reach. Dogs are less affected and usually get only an upset stomach.
Will it flower in shade?
It will grow in shade, but flowering is reduced. For a full show give it at least half a day of full sun.
Why does each flower last only a day?
That is the nature of daylilies, hence the name. Stella D'Oro makes up for it with several buds on each stem, so new blooms keep opening for a long period.
