Shara Blue Lomandra (Lomandra fluviatilis 'Shara Blue') is a tidy, compact lomandra about 60cm tall and wide, with very fine, soft, steel blue green leaves. It is bred for humid climates and wetter soils, resists phytophthora and holds banks together. If you want lomandra toughness in a finer, bluer form, this is the one.
Why you'll love it
-
Soft blue green foliage. Very fine leaves are soft to touch, so it suits high traffic areas and gardens with children.
-
Bred for humid climates. It resists phytophthora and is happy in humid conditions and heavier, wetter soils.
-
Tough in exposed sites. It stays resilient in exposed positions, including windy, coastal and rooftop gardens.
-
Drought tolerant. Once established it handles dry spells well.
-
Bank binding roots. It is an excellent erosion control plant for slopes and batters.
Where it works best
Mass planting. Plant 50cm apart in offset rows. The fine tussocks merge into a soft, steel blue sweep and shade out most weeds.
Banks, slopes and retaining walls. The same 50cm grid binds loose soil and softens hard edges where erosion is a worry.
Borders and rockery edges. A compact 60cm clump gives a neat, fine textured edge beside paths, rocks and driveways.
Growing Shara Blue Lomandra in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It is resilient in exposed sites and bred for humid climates, so it suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens, and it tolerates frost.
Soil. It tolerates most soil types. Plant in well drained soil and avoid ground that stays boggy for long periods, although it stands temporary flooding very well.
Water and feed. Mulch and fertilise when planting, and water regularly while it establishes. Once settled it is drought tolerant. Feed once a year to keep the colour strong.
Pruning. Prune only to tidy old growth as needed. Cut out tired leaves in late winter if you want a fresh look.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Shara Blue Lomandra as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It is also listed in 140mm pots in packs of 10 on backorder: order that size and we confirm timing with you before anything ships. Tubes are the standard choice for large scale mass planting and bank work, and they settle fast in warm soil. Plant out soon after arrival, mulch, and water regularly through the first season.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Will it cope with wet ground?
It stands temporary flooding very well, but avoid planting it where the soil is poorly drained or wet for extended periods.
