Red Victory Anthurium (Anthurium andreanum 'Red Victory') brings glossy red heart shaped flowers with bright yellow spikes to shady spots. It grows 60 to 80cm tall and about 60cm wide, with an elegant, open habit rather than a dense mound. Flowers come in spring and autumn, and it suits mixed beds, pots and bright rooms.
Why you'll love it
-
Red and yellow contrast. The glossy red spathes carry a bright yellow spike, a classic combination that reads clearly from across a room.
-
An open, elegant habit. Instead of a tight mound, the leaves and flowers are held with air between them, which gives the plant a relaxed, graceful shape.
-
Glossy from top to bottom. Both the heart shaped leaves and the flowers have a polished surface that catches the light.
-
Long lasting blooms. Flowers hold well on the plant and make good cut flowers for a vase.
-
Colour in shade. It flowers in bright filtered light, so it fills the shaded spots where sun loving plants refuse to bloom.
Where it works best
Mixed beds in tropical gardens. In a frost free garden, plant 50cm apart beneath taller foliage so the leaves overlap into a layered look.
Pots and containers. The open habit looks right in a tall pot on a shaded verandah or patio. Make sure the container drains freely.
Indoors. Choose a bright room with plenty of filtered light but no direct sun. Anthuriums flower in shade, which makes them a good indoor flowering plant.
Growing Red Victory Anthurium in Australia
Position and climate. A sheltered spot in bright, filtered light, away from direct sun. It needs warmth and humidity and must be protected from frost, so outdoors it belongs in tropical and frost free subtropical gardens. In cooler regions, keep it as a houseplant.
Soil. Loose, free draining and rich in organic matter. Mulch garden plantings, and use a quality potting mix for containers.
Water and feed. Water regularly until established, usually around 12 weeks, then keep the soil moist during dry periods. Feed with slow release fertiliser in spring and half strength liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks in the warmer months.
Pruning. Remove spent flower stems and tired leaves at the base. Repot container plants at the start of spring, and avoid contact with the sap when cutting.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Red Victory Anthurium as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube. It is slow growing when young and propagated by tissue culture, so the plant arrives small and builds through its first season. Tube stock comes from our grower, who does not always have it. The tube shows as sold out when the grower has none, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is available again.
Plants travel upright and are best potted up promptly. Keep them warm, shaded and out of draughts for the first few weeks.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Can Red Victory live indoors all year?
Yes. It suits bright rooms with filtered light, steady moisture and warmth. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth when dust builds up, and repot at the start of spring.
When does it flower?
In spring and autumn. Plenty of bright, filtered light gives the longest flowering.
Is it toxic to pets?
Yes. The leaves contain a poisonous substance, and the sap can irritate skin, so plant it away from areas where pets and children play.
