Pia Mina Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Pia Mina') is a dwarf deciduous shrub about 90cm tall and wide, with big clusters of deep rose pink flowers that stay pink whatever your soil. Slow growing and compact, it suits pots, small beds and even a bright spot indoors.
Why you'll love it
-
Permanently pink. Unlike many hydrangeas, the colour does not shift with soil acidity. The shade simply grows richer as the blooms open and age.
-
Genuinely compact. At about 90cm by 90cm it fits a pot, a front border or a small courtyard.
-
Slow and tidy. Slow growth means it will not outgrow its spot quickly, and it needs little pruning beyond a post flowering deadhead.
-
A good indoor plant. It also does well as an indoor plant, making it a flexible pick for a bright room.
Where it works best
Pots and containers. A large pot with good drainage suits it on a patio, entry or balcony. Water often and keep it out of hot afternoon sun.
Small beds and front borders. Plant 80cm apart in a row for a low band of pink that stays tidy.
Indoors. Give it a bright room, out of strong direct sun, and keep the mix moist.
Growing Pia Mina Hydrangea in Australia
Position and climate. Part shade suits it, and it does best in cool temperate and warm temperate gardens. In subtropical gardens give it deep afternoon shade. Protect it from harsh sunlight. Like all macrophylla hydrangeas it drops its leaves in winter, and soft new growth can be nipped by a late frost, so in frosty districts plant it in a sheltered spot or grow it in a pot that can move under cover.
Soil. Rich soil with plenty of organic matter that stays moist but drains. In a pot, use a quality potting mix. The flower colour stays pink in any soil.
Water and feed. Water regularly for the first two to three months while it establishes, and give plenty of water in dry periods. Apply a slow release fertiliser in early spring.
Pruning. It needs little pruning. After flowering, snip off the faded heads just above the next healthy leaves. All parts of the plant are toxic if eaten.
What to expect when it arrives
Pia Mina Hydrangea is sold as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. A tube suits a pot or a small bed. Expect a small plant on arrival that grows slowly and steadily, with flowering building over the first couple of seasons.
Our grower supplies the tube stock, and supply is not always steady. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Will it stay pink in my soil?
Yes. Pia Mina is bred to stay pink, so it keeps its rose pink colour whatever the soil pH.
How big does it get?
About 90cm tall and 90cm wide, and it grows slowly, so it stays in scale with a pot or a small bed.
Is it safe for pets?
No. Hydrangeas are toxic to dogs and cats if eaten, so grow it where pets cannot chew the leaves or flowers.
