Ozsuperb Oregano (Origanum vulgare 'OREG02') is a strong flavoured, traditional Greek style oregano bred by Ozbreed for the kitchen. It forms a blue green clump 20cm to 30cm high and 30cm to 40cm wide, with cleaner foliage through winter and summer. Ozbreed describes the flavour as a true culinary oregano rather than the medicinal taste of some strong types.
Why you'll love it
-
True culinary flavour. Strong and traditional, it stays consistent through cooking instead of turning medicinal.
-
Flavour of mature wild herbs. Ozbreed says it delivers flavours previously only available from mature, wild grown Mediterranean herbs.
-
Ornamental blue green foliage. It is a highly ornamental form, so it earns its place in a border as well as a herb bed.
-
Clean foliage in winter and summer. Ozbreed lists cleaner foliage through both seasons, so the clump looks tidy all year.
-
Compact and tidy. At 20cm to 30cm high it suits pots, edges and rockeries.
Where it works best
Herb beds. Plant 30cm apart in full sun to light shade. It can go in all year round, though spring, summer and early autumn are best.
Pots and courtyards. A wide, free draining pot in the sun keeps it close to the stove and suits its dislike of wet feet.
Edges and rockeries. The low, blue green clumps work well along sunny paths and among stones, where drainage is sharp.
In the kitchen. Ozbreed recommends it for cooked dishes because of its strong flavour. Use it in sauces, on pizza, with grilled meats and with roast vegetables.
Growing Ozsuperb Oregano in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to light shade. Oregano is a hardy perennial that thrives in temperate and Mediterranean gardens and tolerates frost. In humid, wet summers, airflow and drainage matter, so a raised bed or pot is the safer choice.
Soil. It prefers well drained soil. Avoid wet feet, which is the main way oregano is lost.
Water and feed. Water as required, letting the soil dry out between waterings. Avoid over watering, particularly in winter. In spring and autumn, if required, apply a slow release fertiliser or incorporate compost into the soil.
Pruning and harvest. Pick stems as you need them, and cut the clump back by about a third after flowering to keep it compact and encourage fresh, tender growth.

Common questions
Is it better fresh or dried?
Ozbreed recommends it for cooked dishes because of its strong flavour. Fresh sprigs go into sauces and roasts, and cut stems dry well.
How far apart should I plant it?
Plant 30cm apart. It reaches 30cm to 40cm wide, so the plants will meet at maturity.
What kills oregano most often?
Wet roots. Plant it in free draining soil or a pot, and water only once the soil has dried.
