Orange Marmalade Grevillea (Grevillea venusta x glossadenia 'Orange Marmalade') is a large native shrub 2m to 3m tall and wide, with long, smooth-edged oval leaves and rounded, deep orange flowers that stand upright through the year. It looks quite unlike most grevilleas, clips extremely well into a neat hedge, and copes very well with humidity.
Why you'll love it
-
Orange flowers all year. Upright, deep orange looped flowers appear through the year, and the plant flowers best with regular water.
-
It clips into a neat hedge. For such an exuberant shrub, it takes clipping well and holds a tidy shape.
-
Humidity is no problem. It copes very well with humid conditions, which many other grevilleas dislike.
-
A draw for birds and butterflies. The honey-laden flowers feed birds and attract butterflies.
-
An unconventional look. The oval, smooth-edged leaves make it a talking point in a native bed.
Where it works best
Clipped hedges. Plant 1m apart in a single row. The plants merge within a couple of seasons, and regular clipping gives a dense, flowering hedge about 2m high.
Specimen and feature planting. Left unclipped, it makes a handsome 2m to 3m flowering shrub for a prominent corner.
Bush and informal gardens. Use it as a bold mid-sized shrub among natives, where the orange flowers contrast with grey and green foliage.
Growing Orange Marmalade Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. It is best in warm subtropical and coastal gardens. It is not frost hardy, so protect it from frost or choose another grevillea for cold sites. It tolerates occasional dry spells but flowers better with regular water.
Soil. Well drained clay loam or sandy soil with a neutral to acid pH suits it. Avoid sites where water sits after rain.
Water and feed. Water well until established, and keep regular water up in dry spells for the best flowering. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, with phosphorus under 3 per cent.
Pruning. Cut gently back to height and shape as required, but do not cut too hard. Regular light clipping suits a hedge.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Orange Marmalade Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, in 140mm pots in packs of 10, in 200mm pots in packs of 6 and in 300mm pots singly. The larger pots give an instant hedge line, while tubes are the economical choice for a long run and catch up quickly in warm weather. Our grower does not always have tube stock to send. When the tube reads sold out, the notify button on the page will email you the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
