Morocco Elephant's Ear (Alocasia lowii 'Morocco') is a rainforest plant with big, dark green arrow-shaped leaves, bold white veins and wine-red backs on pink stems. It grows between 50cm and 1m tall and about 80cm wide. The leaves are larger and bolder than most alocasias, and the plant asks for a little attention in return.
Why you'll love it
-
White veins on dark leaves. The prominent veining makes a graphic pattern against deep green and gives the plant real drama.
-
Three colours in one plant. Green leaves, wine-coloured undersides and pink stems combine in a way few foliage plants manage.
-
Generous leaves. The blades are large, and the outline is usually smooth rather than deeply indented.
-
A plant that develops. Young leaves start bright green, then darken and sharpen their veining, which makes it rewarding to raise.
-
Pot or garden. It makes a handsome indoor feature, and in a warm tropical garden it can grow to its full size.
Where it works best
Indoor feature plant. Choose a roomy spot with bright light for at least half the day and no direct sun. Stand it on tile or a washable surface, because it may drip harmless sap.
Tropical gardens. In a warm, sheltered, frost-free bed, allow 80cm between plants. A rich, moist, free draining loam suits it.
Growing Morocco Elephant's Ear in Australia
Position and climate. Aim to recreate a rainforest: steamy, warm and shaded from strong sun. Bright light for half the day is enough, and direct sun is too much. Outdoors it belongs in tropical and sheltered, frost-free subtropical gardens, and everywhere else it is an indoor plant. Keep it warm and sheltered.
Soil. A rich, moist loam that drains freely. In a pot, use a good potting mix and check that water runs out of the base.
Water and feed. Water a little and often to keep the mix damp but not soggy, and mist if your climate is dry. Many plants rest in winter, so cut back the watering when growth slows.
Turning and tidying. Give an indoor pot a quarter turn every month or so to keep the plant even. Remove old leaves at the base as they tire.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Morocco Elephant's Ear as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives as a young plant with bright green leaves, and the darker colour and distinctive veining develop as it grows. Keep it warm, sheltered and out of direct sun while it settles in. The tubes come from our grower, who does not always have them. A sold out tube simply means none is available today, and the notify button on the page emails you the day stock is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Why are the new leaves bright green?
Young leaves start bright green and darken as they mature, with the white veins becoming more distinct. This is normal.
Does it need a rest in winter?
Often, yes. Plants commonly go through a dormant period in winter, so reduce watering when growth slows and resume as it recovers.
Is it safe around cats and dogs?
No. It is toxic if eaten and the sap can irritate mouths and skin. Keep the pot out of reach, and wash your hands after handling it.
