Miranda Pitcher Plant (Nepenthes 'Miranda') is a good first pitcher plant with very large, creamy pitchers splashed with red and finished with deep red lips. It grows fast, is heat tolerant and can reach 60cm or more in height. A mature plant can trap quite large insects. It comes from Malaysia and is happiest in a warm, humid spot.
Why you'll love it
-
Huge, handsome pitchers. The big creamy pouches are spotted with red and finished with a deep red lip and lid.
-
A good variety for beginners. It is among the more forgiving pitcher plants, so it suits a first-time carnivorous plant grower.
-
Fast growing. It puts on growth quickly, so a young plant soon reaches a size worth showing off.
-
Heat tolerant. It copes with warm weather, which makes summer less of a worry.
-
Serious traps. Full grown pitchers can catch quite large insects, which makes it a talking point.
Where it works best
A bright, warm room. At 60cm or more it needs space, so choose a tall plant stand or a bright corner away from heaters and cold draughts.
Verandahs and tropical gardens. In tropical regions it can live outdoors, hung from a verandah beam or tucked in the fork of a tree, in filtered light.
Pots and baskets. A large hanging basket lets the pitchers hang freely while the roots stay airy.
Growing Miranda Pitcher Plant in Australia
Position and climate. Miranda is heat tolerant, but nights should still stay above 10C and the air should stay humid. Outdoors all year, that means tropical gardens. Elsewhere, grow it indoors in bright, filtered light and move it outside only in the warmest months.
Soil. Pot it in orchid mix with chunks of bark, sphagnum moss or coir, so air reaches the roots and water drains away fast. A large pot suits a plant that reaches 60cm or more.
Water and feed. Mist regularly and water often, but do not let the mix go soggy. Rainwater or filtered water is best. Once a year, a mature plant might need a pick-me-up of diluted orchid feed.
Pruning. No pruning is needed. Remove pitchers and leaves with clean scissors when they turn brown.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Miranda Pitcher Plant as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small, with the big pitchers still to come. Pot it into orchid mix soon after it arrives and give it warmth and humidity.
The tubes come from our grower, and stock is not constant. When the grower has none the tube shows as sold out, and the notify button on this page emails you the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
