Mirage Rose Bicolour Mexican Sage (Salvia greggii 'Mirage Rose Bicolour') is a small, neat sage only 30cm high and 40cm wide, covered in bright pink and white flowers from spring to autumn. The Mirage series is bred for heat tolerance, a tidy rounded shape and less maintenance. Butterflies and nectar drinking birds come for the flowers.
Why you'll love it
-
Hot pink and white. Each flower pairs bright pink with white, a cheerful two tone effect on a very small plant.
-
A neat, rounded mound. It keeps a tidy shape without much help, so a light trim is usually all it needs.
-
Built for heat. Heat tolerant, and tolerant of overnight frost once established, so it suits a wide range of Australian gardens.
-
Small enough for pots. At 30cm high it fits tubs, planters and the very front of a border.
-
Wildlife visitors. Butterflies and nectar drinking birds visit the flowers across the warmer months.
Where it works best
Pots and tubs. Plant one to a pot at least 250mm wide, and place it where you will see the pink and white flowers up close.
The front of a border. Plant 40cm apart in a row for a continuous edge of colour. At that spacing the mounds touch within a season.
Cottage and wildlife gardens. Tuck it between taller perennials, where it keeps the front of the bed in flower while the larger plants build.
Growing Mirage Rose Bicolour Mexican Sage in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It is heat tolerant and handles overnight frost once established, so it suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens. Protect young plants from hard frost by mulching in winter or sheltering them under a cloche.
Soil. Light, free draining soil suits it best. On heavy clay plant on a low mound or keep it in a pot.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until established, usually around 12 weeks. Feed in spring with a slow release fertiliser, and add a boost of seaweed tonic in the summer heat.
Pruning. Cut back after flowering to encourage fresh growth and more flowers. The compact habit means you only need to shape it lightly.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Mirage Rose Bicolour Mexican Sage as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tubes suit a long edging, while the 140mm pots give a fuller plant from day one. Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button emails you the day it is back.
Plants travel upright and settle fast. Plant out soon after delivery, water in well and mulch the soil.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
