Millions Philodendron (Philodendron 'Millions') is a big, leafy plant that can reach 3m tall and wide in the ground, with glossy dark heart-shaped leaves on orange-red stems. In cooler regions it makes an excellent houseplant, and in subtropical gardens it is a shade plant that fills a sheltered border.
Why you'll love it
-
Red stems, dark leaves. New stems are a rich orange-red against deep green foliage, a contrast that holds all year.
-
Big, glossy leaves. The heart-shaped leaves are large and shiny, so one plant fills a corner.
-
Houseplant or garden plant. It works indoors in a pot and in a sheltered, shaded subtropical border.
-
Plenty of presence. At full size in the ground, it can reach 3m by 3m, which suits a spacious bed.
-
Easy to keep clean. A wipe of the leaves removes dust and keeps them shiny.
Where it works best
Sheltered, shaded borders. Allow 2m between plants in frost free gardens, since each can spread to 3m, and use it as a border in a tropical style planting.
Large indoor pots. In a pot indoors it stays far smaller, and in colder regions it is a dependable houseplant in a bright, sheltered room.
Shaded underplanting. It fills the space beneath taller trees, provided the spot is sheltered and out of direct sun.
Growing Millions Philodendron in Australia
Position and climate. A sheltered position suits it, out of direct sunlight, with plenty of bright, filtered light and protection from cold. Keep children and pets away from it, since the leaves contain a poisonous substance, and avoid skin contact.
Soil. Rich, free draining soil or potting mix. In the garden, mulch thickly so the roots stay cool and moist.
Water and feed. Water regularly until the plant is established, about 12 weeks, then whenever the soil dries in summer. It enjoys humidity, so a mist helps in dry air. Give a slow release feed in spring, and top up through the warm months with a liquid feed at half strength, which avoids leaf burn.
Pruning. Little is needed beyond removing damaged leaves. Wipe dust from the foliage to keep it shiny, and repot container plants at the start of spring.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Millions Philodendron as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. The tube is a small starter, and this is a plant that takes time to reach its full size. Pot it into fresh mix soon after it arrives, or plant it into a sheltered, shaded spot, and keep it moist while it settles.
Tubes are grown for us and are not always available. When the tube is sold out, press the notify button on this page and it emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
