Kings Park Royale Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos hybrid 'Kings Park Royale') is a medium-sized kangaroo paw about 60cm tall and 50cm wide, with unusual purple, mauve and orange flowers from spring to autumn. Inside each paw there is a flash of emerald and lime. It was bred at Kings Park Botanic Garden in Perth, and it handles salt air, drought and a light overnight frost.
Why you'll love it
-
Colours you rarely see. Purple buds on orange stems, with emerald and lime inside, give a combination few other kangaroo paws offer.
-
A long season. Flowers appear from spring through to autumn, and regular tidying prolongs them.
-
Tougher than most. It tolerates salt air, drought and a light overnight frost, so it has more flexibility than many kangaroo paws.
-
Nectar for birds. The nectar rich flowers attract birds and are excellent for cut flower arrangements.
-
Bred in Perth. Kings Park Botanic Garden raised it to mark 25 years of the Friends of Kings Park, which gives it a story worth telling.
Where it works best
Feature pots. Use a 30cm or larger pot of free draining native potting mix in the sunniest spot you have, where the unusual colours can be seen up close.
Native and mixed beds. Plant 50cm apart in drifts of three or five, among grey-green natives and ornamental grasses.
Cutting gardens. A small group gives plenty of stems for the vase without leaving the garden bare.
Growing Kings Park Royale Kangaroo Paw in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun in a frost-free or very lightly frosted position, with plenty of air movement. It tolerates salt air, drought and a light overnight frost. Kangaroo paws prefer drier climates, so it is happiest in Mediterranean, warm temperate and dry inland gardens. In humid or colder districts, grow it in a pot you can move.
Soil. Light, free draining soil. On clay or in a heavy bed, use a raised mound or a pot filled with native potting mix.
Water and feed. Water regularly while it establishes, then deeply in dry weather, and let the soil dry between waterings. Feed in spring with a low phosphorus native fertiliser.
Pruning. Remove the first flower spike to help stimulate new buds. Cut spent flowers and dead foliage regularly to prolong flowering and keep the plant healthy.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Kings Park Royale Kangaroo Paw as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. The tubes are supplied by our grower, so stock comes and goes. A sold out tube means the grower has none right now, and the notify button on this page emails you the day it returns. Expect a small, leafy young plant. Plant it in full sun at the same depth as the tube and water it in well.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
