Jazz Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos hybrid 'Jazz') is a neat, compact kangaroo paw that forms a clump about 40cm tall and 40cm wide. Deep purple and red flowers with bright lime green accents appear from autumn to spring, and they are rich in nectar for birds. It is part of the Celebrations series bred by Kings Park Botanic Gardens in Perth.
Why you'll love it
-
Colours you rarely see. Deep purple and red flowers with lime green touches make a combination seldom found in a kangaroo paw.
-
Compact and tidy. At about 40cm across it fits small beds, borders and pots without crowding its neighbours.
-
A long season. Flowers arrive from autumn through to spring, when many gardens need colour.
-
Loved by birds. The flowers are nectar rich and bird attracting, and the stems are excellent in cut flower arrangements.
-
Tough for its size. It tolerates salt air, drought and a light overnight frost once established.
Where it works best
Feature pots. Plant it as a feature in a pot on a sunny step, courtyard or balcony, in a free draining native potting mix.
Native and mixed gardens. Plant 40cm apart in groups of three or five along a path or at the front of a bed. Grouped plants give a far stronger show than single ones.
Coastal gardens. Salt air does not worry it, so it suits sunny, open coastal positions with good drainage.
Growing Jazz Kangaroo Paw in Australia
Position and climate. Choose a sunny, frost free spot with plenty of air movement. Once established it tolerates light overnight frost, salt air and drought. Kangaroo paws prefer drier air than the humid coast provides, so in humid gardens give it the airiest position you have, or keep it in a pot.
Soil. Light, free draining soil is the key. On heavy clay, plant on a mound about 20cm high, or use a pot.
Water and feed. Water weekly through the first summer, then a deep drink every week or two in dry weather keeps the flowers strong. Feed lightly in early spring with a low phosphorus native fertiliser.
Pruning. Remove the first flower spike to help stimulate new flower buds. Then cut spent flowers and dead foliage regularly, which prolongs flowering and keeps the plant healthy.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Jazz Kangaroo Paw as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Tubes suit planting a group of three or five. Plants travel upright and compact. Plant them at the same depth as the tube, water in well, and expect them to bulk up and begin flowering as the seasons turn.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
When does Jazz flower?
From autumn through to spring. Removing the first flower spike and cutting spent flowers regularly helps to keep new buds coming.
Will it cope with salt air?
Yes. It tolerates salt air, which makes it a good choice for coastal gardens, as long as the soil drains freely and the position is sunny.
Is it safe for pets?
Kangaroo paws are not known to be toxic to dogs or cats, so Jazz is a sensible choice for pots and beds where pets roam.
