Green Goddess Philodendron (Philodendron hybrid 'Green Goddess') is a compact, bushy philodendron with dark green, heart-shaped leaves carried on lots of stems. In the garden it can reach 1 to 2m tall and about 1m wide, but in a pot it stays low for many years. It holds itself up, so there is no moss pole to fuss over.
Why you'll love it
-
Bushy from the base. Many stems carry glossy leaves from low down, so the plant looks full rather than leggy.
-
Dark, heart-shaped leaves. The deep green foliage is glossy and calm, and sits well with almost any decor.
-
No support required. Unlike the long, climbing types, it keeps a bushy shape on its own.
-
Stays low in a pot. Kept in a container, it remains compact for many years, which suits indoor spaces.
-
Undemanding care. An occasional mist or a wipe of the leaves is all it needs to keep looking its best.
Where it works best
Indoor pots. Choose a generous pot in a bright room with filtered light. In a container it stays low and bushy, which makes it a good living-room or office plant.
Shady tropical borders. In frost free gardens, plant 80cm apart beneath trees or along a shaded wall. In the ground it grows larger than it does in a pot.
Entries and sheltered patios. A large pot in a shaded, protected entry gives lush greenery without the sprawl of a climber.
Growing Green Goddess Philodendron in Australia
Position and climate. It suits tropical and subtropical gardens without frost, and homes and workplaces anywhere. Bright, filtered light is ideal. Protect it from cold, and plant it away from places where children and pets play, because the leaves contain a poisonous substance. Avoid contact with the skin.
Soil. A free draining potting mix, or garden soil rich in organic matter. Mulch garden plants to hold moisture, and make sure pots drain freely.
Water and feed. Keep it moist through dry periods and mist regularly, because philodendrons thrive in humid conditions. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Pruning. No regular pruning is needed. If dust collects on indoor plants, wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to bring back the glossy finish, and repot container plants at the beginning of spring.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Green Goddess Philodendron as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. The tube is a small starter that fills out into a bush over time. Pot it into fresh mix soon after it arrives, put it in bright, filtered light, and be patient, because it thickens up gradually rather than overnight.
Our grower supplies the tubes, and supply comes and goes. If the tube shows as sold out, the grower has none at the moment, and the notify button on this page will email you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
