Golden Lyre Grevillea (Grevillea 'Golden Lyre') is a wide, layered native shrub about 2m tall that can spread 3m to 8m across. Long yellow brush flowers with chocolate-brown bases open from lime green buds above arching branches of fine, feathery foliage. Give it room as a feature plant and it rewards you with a heavy display of flowers.
Why you'll love it
-
Huge golden brushes. The long yellow flowers, with brown bases and lime green buds, are big even on a young plant.
-
A layered, mounding shape. Wide-spreading, arching branches stack into tiers, so the plant looks sculpted without any pruning.
-
Fine, gold-tinted foliage. Feathery leaves carry a golden tint at the tips when young.
-
Built for the subtropics. This is a subtropical hybrid, so it suits warm, frost-free gardens.
-
Good for nectar feeders. Like most grevilleas, the nectar-rich brushes bring in honeyeaters and other birds.
Where it works best
Feature planting. Plant a single specimen with at least 3m of clear space. In ideal conditions it can reach up to 8m across, while staying only about 2m high.
Informal screening. Plant 3m apart for a loose, layered screen. It will not be a neat clipped hedge, but it fills a wide boundary with colour.
Native gardens. Pair it with lower natives in front, so the arching branches spill over them.
Growing Golden Lyre Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It is frost sensitive, so it is best in frost-free subtropical and warm temperate gardens. In gardens with hard frosts, choose a different grevillea.
Soil. Well drained soil is essential. Apply a layer of mulch after planting to keep the roots cool and moist while the plant establishes.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until established, which usually takes around 12 weeks. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, using one with phosphorus under 3 per cent.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to encourage dense growth. Remove only the spent flower tips and any stray branches, which keeps the layered shape intact.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Golden Lyre Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, in 140mm pots in packs of 10, in 200mm pots in packs of 6 and in 300mm pots singly. The larger pots give a bigger plant straight away, which is handy for a feature position, while tubes are the economical choice for a longer screen. Expect new growth within weeks in warm weather. Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the page reads sold out, use the notify button and you will get an email the day it returns.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
