Gold Rush Grevillea (Grevillea alpina x rosmarinifolia 'Gold Rush') is a very compact native shrub, about 1m tall and wide, with slender rosemary-like foliage and curled golden flowers tipped with a contrasting red stamen. The leaves take on a golden hue in the cold months. Frost and drought tolerant, it fits small gardens, containers and underplanting.
Why you'll love it
-
Golden flowers. Curled yellow flowers carry a red stamen, a sharp contrast that stands out against the slender leaves.
-
Neat and compact. At 1m by 1m it suits small gardens and tight spots without pruning to hold it back.
-
Foliage that warms up in winter. Leaves pick up a golden hue in the cold months.
-
Frost and drought tolerant. It copes with cold snaps and dry spells, and performs well in drier climates.
-
Food for birds. The flowers are a nectar source for native birds.
Where it works best
Containers and window boxes. The compact size suits large pots on patios and balconies, in full sun with a free draining mix.
Underplanting. It slides in beneath taller shrubs. Plant 80cm apart where you want a continuous low band of yellow.
Small gardens and borders. Its tidy shape keeps front gardens and narrow beds looking cared for.
Growing Gold Rush Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. It flowers best in full sun and tolerates light shade. It is frost and drought tolerant and performs well in drier climates, so it suits temperate, Mediterranean and inland gardens.
Soil. Plant in free draining soil. Raised beds and slopes work well in heavier ground.
Water and feed. Water regularly during the first 8 to 12 weeks until the plant is established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, and choose one with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas are sensitive to phosphorus.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to promote flowering, a dense habit and to control growth. A hard prune every 3 to 4 years brings a fresh flush of flowers and foliage.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Gold Rush Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, in 140mm pots in packs of 10, and in 200mm pots in packs of 6. Tubes suit underplanting in numbers, while the 200mm pots give a quicker display in a feature pot or bed. Expect a small, fine-leaved plant that fills out over the first season.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
