Glowing Embers Azalea (Azalea x hybrida 'Glowing Embers') is a small to medium evergreen shrub, about 1m high and wide, that opens ruffled coral, orange and salmon flowers in late spring. The colour changes with the light and ages from a redder shade to a paler one, so the display keeps shifting through the season.
Why you'll love it
-
Warm, changing colour. Coral, orange and salmon shades vary from bloom to bloom, emerging redder and fading gently paler.
-
Ruffled petal edges. The softly frilled petals give each flower a layered look that suits cottage and woodland planting.
-
Late spring flowering. It flowers late in the season, which extends the colour in a mixed azalea planting.
-
A compact size. At about 1m by 1m it suits borders, patios and a wide range of garden situations.
-
Takes a light frost. Once established, it tolerates light frost.
Where it works best
Mass displays. Plant 80cm apart in a group for a warm block of colour. The orange tones look best against dark green foliage.
Feature planting. A single plant by a doorway or in a bed of ferns gives the soft, glowing colour a quiet backdrop.
Pots. It grows well in a large container filled with azalea mix. Stand the pot where you can watch the flower colour change.
Growing Glowing Embers Azalea in Australia
Position and climate. Azaleas love dappled light, with morning sun, afternoon sun or both. Full sun is acceptable but not in a hot, dry, exposed position. Flower colour changes between shade and sun, so judge the light in the spot where it will grow. It suits subtropical, warm temperate and cool temperate gardens and tolerates light frost once established.
Soil. Moist, free draining soil rich in organic matter is ideal. Azaleas prefer acid conditions, so mulch with pine bark or pine needles. In alkaline ground, grow it in a large pot of azalea mix.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until established, usually around 12 weeks, then continue watering regularly through the first twelve months. Azaleas do not like drying out. Use a slow release fertiliser made for azaleas and camellias.
Pruning. Prune after the late spring flowers finish to promote a dense habit and flowers next season. Remove only the soft tips.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Glowing Embers Azalea as tube stock and in 200mm pots in packs of 6. Tube stock is a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, while the 200mm pots arrive larger and closer to flowering size.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Why does the flower colour change?
The petals open redder and fade gently paler with age, and the colour also looks different in sun than in shade. That variation is part of its charm.
Is it safe for pets?
No. Azaleas are toxic to cats, dogs and other animals if eaten, so keep pets away from it or choose another shrub for a garden where they chew plants.
How often should I water it?
Keep the soil evenly moist, particularly in the first year. Azaleas do not like drying out, and mulch helps hold moisture in summer.
